Ray was born in Jasper, Alabama to the late Lonnie and Elzia Phillips Weddle and graduated Walker High School. He went on to attend the University of the South in Suwanee, Tennessee, where he played basketball, was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and received his bachelor’s degree in Economics. After college, he was employed by Owens Corning and lived in South Carolina and Connecticut, before settling in Calhoun, Georgia. While in Calhoun, he became a very active member of the community, serving as a member of the Rotary Club of Calhoun, the Elks Club and serving as a member and President of the Calhoun City Board of Education and retired as President of Mannington Mills. Ray enjoyed playing golf, reading, traveling, baseball, football and spending time with his grandchildren. He had lived in Athens for the past five years and was a member of St. Stephen’s Anglican Catholic Church.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Weddle was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Ann Hill Weddle; brother and sister-in-law, Herschel “Huss” and Margaret Weddle; and brother-in-law, Wayne O’Rear.
Mr. Weddle is survived by his children, David Gregory (Greg) Weddle and his wife, Angela of Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada; Susan Deanna Weddle Kasay and her husband, John of Athens; and Matthew V. Weddle of Calhoun; sister, Mary Faye O’Rear of Jasper, Alabama; grandchildren, Court Weddle of California; John Weddle of Pennsylvania; Paul Kasay and Kaitlin Kasay both of Atlanta.
A private memorial service will be held, followed by celebration of life at a later date.
