
Richard was the son of the late Richard M. Brooks Sr. and Jennie Mae Cartledge Brooks. He served his country with honor in the United States Army during the Korean War. Following his military service, he dedicated 50 years of his career to working at Sears.
In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Phyllis Brooks; his brothers: Dolph Brooks and James Brooks; and his sister, Grace Oswalt.
He is survived by his children: Julie Creasy (Phillip), Steve Brooks, Jimmy Brooks, Kelly Steed, and Jim Lewee (Becky). Richard was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren and great-grandfather to nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers: Gerald Brooks and David Brooks, and his sister, Geraldine McElreath.
Richard was a very active member of The Elks Club, contributing to his community with dedication and passion.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at Bernstein Funeral Home, located at 3195 Atlanta Highway, Athens, on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to a charity of the donor's choice.
