Born September 21, 1928 in New Hope, Alabama Mr. Lewis was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Lewis. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by brothers William and Don Lewis.
On May 20, 1949 he married the love of his life Martha Simpson. Together they raised a family of four in the Tennessee town of Redbank. Hoyt was a lifetime member of the Redbank Masonic Lodge and was also very active in the Jaycees and Lions Club, as well as a city Commissioner. Hoyt was a homebuilder and master carpenter, as well as employee with DuPont.
In 1976 they relocated to Athens, GA. He later retired from DuPont of Athens with 38 years of service as a supervisor in the flooring systems department. During that time he also started The Lewis Bindery, which has now been in business for 32 years. A lifetime member of the Athens Elks Lodge and past Exalted Ruler, he gave generously of his time and talent. He was also a member of the Athens Moose Lodge. Hoyt never met a stranger. His outgoing personality always won people over. He was always quick with a joke and loved to have a good time.
Hoyt grew up with a thirst for adventure, always ready to try something new. As an avid outdoorsman he went on fishing trips to Alaska, snowmobiling in Colorado, and four wheeling in the mountains of Tellico. With his love of the outdoors he became very dedicated to many charities that defended and protected wildlife.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years Martha Lewis, children Janet (Louis) Coite of New Smyrna Beach, FL; Murphy Lewis of Athens, GA; Bobbie Lewis of Athens, GA; Brenda (Terry) Carnes of Bluffton, SC. Grandchildren Candice (Ryan) Meeler, Kevin Lewis, and Megan Morfeld. Great-grandchildren Mason and Abbey Meeler, Sylis Crevier.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Bernstein Funeral Home Monday May 6, 2013. Visitation will begin at 6pm, followed by services beginning at 7pm.
