She had a long and distinguished career at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, where she was the first professor in Early Childhood Education and the architect of the early childhood education program. She was also the founder of the campus child-care center in 1971, which developed into the nationally recognized Early Childhood Education Center (ECEC) that was at the forefront of research and teacher education. She often collaborated professionally with her husband Eli, for example in bringing the widely influential Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education and development to the United States. In recognition of their contributions, she and Eli were jointly awarded the Betty Garlick Lifetime Achievement Award from the State of Michigan in 2000.

A graveside service will be 5 p.m., Thursday, October 28, 2021, at Oconee Hill Cemetery.
