Vic, born April 10, 1930, in Lavonia, Georgia was the son of William Robert and Ollie McGee Vickery. He was the youngest son and predeceased by brothers: Ralph, Charles, and Asa Vickery, and sisters: Cecil Wilson, Nola Griffin, Julia Haley, Lizzie Kate Boleman, Syble Campbell, Jodine Moore, and Kathleen Broome. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Martha Jean Vickery, his 5 children and their spouses: Renee and Harold Bennett, Larry Vickery, Susan and Stanley Kent, Rudy Vickery, and Marty and Lori Vickery, and his 6 grandchildren: Matthew and Elizabeth Kent, Emily and Lucas Vickery, and Autumn and Mandi Vickery; step-grandchildren, Tonya Weckler, David Kent (deceased), Stephen and Jason Kent, 1 great grandchild, and many nieces and nephews.
Vic’s life began in poverty during The Great Depression. He grew up on a farm, working hard each day, tilling the fields with his favorite mule Tobe. Vic lost his mother early in life and his father was a harsh man with an abrasive personality who rarely had a kind word. Because of this, Vic learned early to truly appreciate a kind word or gesture and to give kind words as much as possible. He dedicated his life to becoming a positive role model as a father, husband, and friend.
This positivity flowed over to his work life which made Vic a wonderful worker at ARMC Security. He took pride in his ability to be a calming presence in the face of chaos; and his ability to use his keen sense of humor to defuse many tense situations. Because of his dedication and love of his job he won the Senior Worker of the Year representing Georgia in a nation competition.
Not only was Vic a wonderful security guard, he was also an outstanding insurance salesman in his earlier years for American General. He retired there after 35 years of climbing the ladder and becoming a northeast claims adjuster. Everyone always said he could sell an Eskimo and igloo!
Not only was Vic a great worker for our community, but he was also a great worker for the Lord. He was a founding member of his current church Heritage Fellowship and gave his time to do mission work, fellowship and his time to do mission work, fellowship, and outreach. He had many years of Christian service doing ushering, deacon work, men’s fellowship and providing support services for his church. His love for Jesus was surely shown through his works and wonderful personality.
Vic was always an action lover and made life fun, but also knew how to enjoy the smaller things in life. A good cup of coffee, a budding new plant or conversation, or the bite of fish on the hook could make him smile all day long. He will be missed most of all for his charm, smile, sense of humor, and love that surrounded him and anyone he was around. Vic was truly one of a kind and the Lord surely broke the mold when He made him.
