A native of Jackson County, GA, Ms. Tolbert was the daughter of the late
Lloyd William Chastain and Nellie Cornelia Simmons Chastain McKern and was
preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Nell Stephens and a grandson, Mitch
Allen.
She was a member of and an active volunteer with the Council on Aging. Sue
was an active member of First Christian Church where she worshiped,
attended Sunday school and was a member of a women's circle. She led a
Sunday study group at Denny Towers faithfully for 7 years. She was the 2nd
floor captain and loved and cared for her Denney Towers neighbors, as they
also loved and cared for her. She delighted in her grandchildren.
Sue was a courageous woman who lived through and beyond many challenges in
her life. She truly blossomed in her later years and lived her life with
determination and gratitude.
Survivors include sons, Ralph D Allen of Duluth, GA, Danny Joiner of
Nicholson, GA, and Michael Kevin Tolbert of Commerce, GA; daughter, Rev Carol
Hassell of Charlotte, NC; sisters, Jean Abrams and Dot Smith, both of
Athens, GA, and 7 grandchildren: John, David, and Woody Hassell, Lamara and
Deanna Joiner, Ashley and Lindsay Tolbert.
The family will receive friends at 10:00 am before the 11:00 am funeral
service January 6th at First Christian Church with Rev Alan Mace
officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park. The family
will receive friends from 7-9PM Wednesday, January 5th at Bernstein Funeral
Home.
