Joe was born in New Orleans, LA on November 11, 1938, he had a brother Ernest Smith, who came along 7 years later. Joe graduated High School from St. Andrew’s Sewanee in Sewanee, TN where he went to boarding school. Joe served in the Army National Guard in Lousiana from 1957 – 1963. Joe and his former wife, Katherine O’Guin had 3 children. Steve (1960), Deborah (1962) and Raymond (1966). Joe worked as a typesetter for many years then became a warehouse manager. Joe retired from JW Outfitters at the age of 70. Joe loved to coach little league baseball and did this for several years. Joe also loved hunting especially Deer Hunting! He enjoyed the time spent in the woods and would take his children hunting on many occasions. Joe had 6 grandchildren; Stephen Harlin (Nicole), Shawn Harlin, Nicholas Herzog, Jacob Herzog, Sam Herzog and Anneke Herzog. Joe had a quiet demeanor but a very dry sense of humor and his blue eyes sparkled with his witty observations He is survived by his children, grandchildren, as well as his brother Ernest Smith (Linda), their children and grandchildren.
Services will be held Monday Nov. 18th at 2 PM, at the H.M. Patterson & Son - Oglethorpe Hill Chapel with visitation from 12 PM – 2 PM prior to the service. Burial will follow at North Atlanta Memorial Park.
