I have so many memories of SSG P he was my mentor, hero, and my friend.  I was directly under him majority of my military career he was the first person I saw when I got to White sands. He taught me everything I know and he never missed a beat even being one of the oldest out of our platoon the dirty squirrels. He showed us up all the time at the range or pt you name it. I miss him so much he always gave the best advice. Never not smiling and bring positivity 24/7. With out a doubt I trusted him with my life. He never let nobody down always came through for anything you needed even if it’s just to listen. He is a real true American hero. Honestly I wouldn’t have made it through my tour with out him. Our rooms was literally 5 ft from mine. He saved me countless times that I don’t think even he realized. I can go on and on but I will say one of the best memory I have is the time I had just gotten my family moved on post. I was having money issues e1s don't really make a lot starting out. So I went to my chain of command at the time they all told me to pretty much figure it out or get a loan and debt. At the time i just had a kid as well. SSG P at the time was a e3 he didn’t even know me that well but when he heard about what was going on he took me grocery shopping with no hesitation. When we got to my house he looked at me and said we are brothers now and we look out for each other. I have never been shown that much love and kindness from somebody I just met but that was just the kind of person he was. A true angel on earth would give you the shirt off his back. We love you SSG P and he will forever live on through our memories and prayers. Until we meet again my friend your soldier Ransome

We were given an assignment to find somebody in the militarty that has fallen with the same,or close to the same, name as we have. My middle name is Alexandria, relatively close to SGT. Alexander's name. Because of SGT. Alexander's sacrifices he and his family made, I am allowed to do and enjoy the things I love to do. I play softball and basketball. I am so thankful I can play the games I love. I am blessed I am able to come to school and not be scared. All because of SGT. I met SSG Povilaitis when he was a SPC stationed in NM just prior to a promotion he was to receive. Today five years later I can still say he is perhaps one of the most well rounded men I have had the pleasure of knowing. He was the first person to ever encourage me to try to do something more challenging in the military. Consequently he was the first inspiration I can recall to attend selection for the Special Forces. Now, years later, I have succeed in that and it brings me great sorrow to see that Alexander Povilaitis is no longer with us. He is directly responsible for the path I have chosen and for that I will always be thankful to have met him. You will not be forgotten Alex.

SSG P. That's what we called him. He changed my life and I only got to know him for a few months. I think about him every day and i'm sorry i couldn't do more for him.

Alex was my first love. He enlisted in the Army when we were dating in 1984. They say you never forget your first love and I know that to be true. It was a sweet, innocent love that I cherished then and think of now as I watch my daughter begin to date. I hope my girls will date boys who are as respectful as Alex was with me. As I look thru the picture on this page and even into the  faceboook/twitter world, I can't even imagine he is not down the street, just around the corner. I think back to the days of writing a love note. I received one from alex in my 8th grade year, his 9th. He was the first boy I loved.
I have it here, SWAK, for my memories forever. 
We don't choose when we come into this world or when we go, we just take those people who grace our life's everyday, with  the knowledge that this could be our forever.

I am a corporate pilot who flew into PDK the morning that Staff Sgt. Alexander G. Povilaitis was flown home. There are no words to describe the pain that I saw that day in Atlanta. There are also no words to describe how grateful and thankful I am to Staff Sgt. Povilaitis for laying down his life so that we may enjoy our freedoms as Americans. To his family: Thank you for the ultimate sacrafice. I was with you there the day that he was flown home and it has changed my life forever. May God bless you.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of Alex's family and friends.  May you be comforted during this rough time and embrace your wonderful memories of him.

I can say Alex was a good man, known him for 16 yrs. He was my neighbor/security & looked after me. While he was away in Mexico my house sold & he rented his home to me. We had lot of GREAT TIMES in that cul de sac it was never quiet (LOL).  
There are no words I can offer that will make this any easier, but hopefully just knowing that people care will allow you to lay some of the burdens on us.

Knowing that he died while serving his country is supposed to bring you a little bit of comfort, and I hope it does. We know that Alex loved being in the Army, and that he was proud of what he was doing. While no armed services member wants to die in the line of duty, they all know it's a possibility, and it's a risk they're willing to take. 
That said, it's never easy on the ones they leave behind. 

To my lil brothers Danny & Blaine: He was a awesome FATHER, I know & this loss will leave a great hole in your life I'm sure. All I can say is that you're perfectly entitled to whatever you're feeling, and you will help yourself if you feel all those emotions instead of trying to bury them. That's the only way you can truly begin to heal. It will get easier with time & you both know that I am here for you, no matter what you might need. (R.I.P Alex) U will Always be Loved & NEVER Forgotten.

I want to give my sincere sympathy and prayers to the family of S.Sgt. Povilaitis. He had already served his country, yet he came back as a reservist to serve again. My son is currently a reservist at a Combat Outpost near where Sgt. Povilaitis died, and though I cannot know the sorrow you are feeling now, I understand the concerns you felt daily during his deployment. Hopefully the knowledge that many people honor his commitment and patriotism will be some comfort during this very difficult time for you.

I wish to offer my deepest sympathies to the Family of Staff Sergeant Povilaitis.  SSG P was one of the finest Noncommissioned Officers I have had the pleasure of serving with.  He was fearless and absolutely dedicated to the mission and the welfare of his Soldiers.  We are all better for having known him and I feel privileged to have served with such a fine Warrior in combat.  He will be missed because he will never be forgotten.
