Dimitrius was the first born of seven children and had the unique distinction of being an “only child” for almost three years. (He was very proud of that fact!) The family resided in Cedartown, Georgia where he, along with his siblings, attended local schools. Dimitrius attended Cedar Hill High School where he was a member of the football team. In 1969, he graduated from Cedartown High School and continued his education at what was then West Georgia College (now University of West Georgia). He received a bachelor’s degree in political science and relocated to Atlanta, where he lived and worked until his passing.
Dimitrius’ interests were many and diverse. Among them were his love of politics, travel, dogs, and tennis. He had a way of engaging with people, be they short-time acquaintances or lifelong friends. There was a youthful quality about Dimitrius that transcended the passage of time – he was truly forever young. What probably brought him the most joy in the last year was being a part of the tennis team at Oglethorpe University. Tennis was his passion, and having an opportunity to work with the young folks at Oglethorpe, this was a dream realized.
Dimitrius is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Reginald and Dana Owens. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Anne McAfee Akins (Dixie); Anne’s son, Sean Akins (Stacy), Pinehurst, NC; his brother: Michael Owens, Cedartown, GA; his sisters: Cheryl E. Simpson (Percy), Ballground, GA; Lisa A. Owens, Cedartown, GA; and Janice O. Beveridge, Newport News, VA; brothers-in-law: Doug McAfee, Blairsville, GA, and Ricky McAfee (Debbie) Lawrenceville, GA., sister-in-law, Denise McAfee Hendler, Blairsville, GA., two nephews (Dana Michael and Olu), five nieces (April, Foluke, Sandy, Erin(Austin) and Carson) , three grandnieces (Ashlynn, Olivia and Elowyn), and a cadre of cousins, friends and colleagues.
