Anthony Zagarella, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, neighbor and friend passed away on Tuesday April 19, 2011. He leaves his wife of 64 years, June, his daughter Kathy (Ken), son John (Debbi), seven grandchildren, Kristin, Kenny, Kirk, Justin, Shawn, Jordyn and Sophia. He is also survived by his brother, Peter and three nieces. “Tony” was raised in Brooklyn NY by his parents who emigrated from Italy. He spent his early years playing handball and stickball while working in his father’s shoe store. He was a very good student and decided to ‘head south’ at the age of sixteen to attend Georgia Tech. In only three years he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. After graduating from Georgia Tech in 1943, he immediately served his country during World War II. During his military service he met his wife while stationed in Palm Beach. Between WW II and the Korean War, Anthony went on to earn his Masters Degree in Industrial Engineering from Columbia University. After serving his country during The Korean War and several years in the Army Reserves, he retired as Lt. Colonel. His private sector career spanned over 40 years. 30 of those years were spent as a Material Planning Engineer for Western Electric/AT&T. It was his transfer to Atlanta with AT&T that brought his family ‘back south’. During his 36 years as a resident of Atlanta, his influence as father, father-in-law, grandfather, friend and neighbor was beyond exemplary. His participation in tailgating and cheering on the Yellow Jackets this year will be sorely missed. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 25th at 10:30am at All Saints Catholic Church, 2443 Mt. Vernon Road, Dunwoody, Georgia, 30338, with entombment to follow at Arlington Memorial Park. Those desiring may make contributions to the American Cancer Society. The family will receive friends Saturday, April 23 from 5 to 7 at H.M. Patterson & Son, Oglethorpe Hill Chapel, 4550 Peachtree Road, NE, Atlanta, Georgia, 30319.
