Barton Jay Hodges

Barton was born in Houston, Texas, to his parents, Bill and Thea. At two years old, he moved to Atlanta where he grew up in the Dunwoody neighborhood with his parents, younger brothers, Adam and Clark, and older brothers, Brad and Todd. Most recently, Barton lived in the Cabbagetown neighborhood of Atlanta with his wife, Katrina, and cat, Pfeffer.

Growing up, Barton was a gifted child, and his parents made the decision to homeschool him where he could excel at his own pace, studying German and ceramics, and conducting science experiments in the backyard. He developed an aptitude for technology from a young age, taking apart and reassembling the family computer to learn how it worked.

He began attending Oglethorpe University at age sixteen, where he earned a dual BA in Psychology and Philosophy and met lifelong friends. After graduation in 2004, Barton moved to Germany to attend Dortmund University, where he studied linguistics. Later, he earned an MA with merit in Philosophy of Cognitive Science from the University of Sussex in Brighton, England. His dissertation explored the similarities between continental philosophy and cognitive science and, in particular, the role of language in cognition.

Barton was the owner and founder of Euclid Networks, an IT consulting business, which he operated for over sixteen years. His clients included diverse members of the Atlanta community, such as nonprofits, restaurants, a bakery, a medical practice, a charter school, and graphic and architectural design firms. Barton also loved his neighborhood, Cabbagetown, and the city of Atlanta, and showed it through his volunteerism, serving as Vice President of the Cabbagetown Initiative board and as the NPU representative to the Eastside Atlanta Tax Allocation District's advisory board.

Barton and Katrina began dating in 2008, bonding over their shared love of cooking, art, literature, and travel. They married in 2013 and celebrated their 13th wedding anniversary on August 31, 2026. They loved to travel together, exploring Indonesia and Singapore on their honeymoon and fulfilling a lifelong dream of going to India where they braved traffic in Mumbai, tried every possible street food, and watched wild cows on the Goan beaches. They also enjoyed trying new restaurants, attending Atlanta United matches, listening to music, dancing, and making art together.

Barton had a curious mind and many talents. He developed a knack for cooking at an early age, working in restaurants and devouring cookbooks. While he never had the opportunity to open the German restaurant he dreamed of, he fed countless friends and family over the years at dinner parties and backyard barbecues. Barton was also a talented potter and developed bonds within his pottery community at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center.

Barton was preceded in death by his father, William Hodges; grandparents, Jay and Joyce Jordan and Frank and Amelia Hodges; and his brother, Todd Hodges.

Barton is survived by his wife, Katrina; mother, Thea; brothers, Adam, Clark, and Brad; father-in-law, Benjamin; mother-in-law, Charlotte; brothers-in-law, Charles and Christopher; sisters-in-law, Kate and Jehae; nieces, Audrey and Evelyn; and nephews, Jordan and Abraham.

A memorial service celebrating Barton’s life will be held at H.M. Patterson – Oglethorpe Hill Chapel on Saturday, September 12 at 10:00 a.m.
