clearly defined disorder that effected her ability to be mobile. For the past 12 years, she was
loved and wonderfully taken care of by the staff of the William Breman Jewish Home near her
longtime Atlanta residence. She had every reason to be angry and bitter over her condition, but
the consistent testimony of those who cared for her was that she was one of their most happy
and joyful residents. It really is amazing what she endured and for so long, yet she seemed to
be more at peace as the days went on.
Betty was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan as Elizabeth Stuart. Her father died suddenly when
she was 5 months old, and a few years later her mother married Dale F. Stansbury, a law
professor, who moved them to Macon, GA and then Wake Forest, NC. Betty attended Brenau
University in Gainesville, GA and later Wake Forest University in her home town where she
graduated.
Betty came to Atlanta from Durham, NC in 1954 with her husband Sam and two young
children. She quickly connected to the Atlanta community splitting her time between caring for
family, volunteering with the Junior League and Piedmont Hospital, and her long devotion to
playing golf. One of her favorite activities was serving as a Pink Lady with the Piedmont
Hospital Women’s Auxiliary. In 1972 she would serve as the Auxiliary’s president hosting the
annual Piedmont Ball, a charity ball for the benefit of the hospital. A true life long passion of
hers was golf. For several decades she hardly ever missed a Friday game at the Cherokee Club
with the Cherokee Women’s Golf Association.
There will be an interment service graveside at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs on
Friday, August 18, 2017 at 12:00 pm. Betty will be laid to rest along side her husband Dr.
Samuel S. Ambrose a well regarded Atlanta Urologist who passed away in 2006. Part of his
remains will be interred at the same time. Sam served at Piedmont Hospital and in later years
as Chief of Urology at Emory University. All friends and family are invited to attend. Dress will
be casual. Rev. Woodrow Barnes, retired chaplain of the Westminster Schools, will officiate.
Betty and Sam were members of Trinity Presbyterian Church and in their later years they were
members of their beloved Big Canoe Chapel at Big Canoe, GA. Betty is survived by her three
children Stuart Ambrose, Ann Ambrose Dilts and S. Bruce Ambrose and her son-in-law John
Dilts.
