Mr. Baugh was preceded in death by his wife of 78 years, Jacqueline Holley Baugh. He is survived by 2 children, Jacqueline Holley Calmes (Mr. Richard C. Calmes) and Charles Henry Baugh, Jr., granddaughter Paris Kucharski and her husband Joe Kucharski, and her 2 sons Zachary Ashton Kucharski and Joseph Alexander Kucharski.
Mr. Baugh liked to say, “I joined the Navy 3 days after my 17th birthday.” His military career took him to the Philippines where he was a member of the Patrol Bombing Squadron 104. He flew out of Clark Field at the combined Army Air Corps and Navy base, located about 40 miles north of Manila.
As an aerial gunner, he saw combat from the enemy in Formosa, flew through the eye of a hurricane, and relaxed by participating in the “gentleman’s sport” of boxing where he obtained the nickname of “Hot Shot Charlie.”
Upon returning from the war, he temporarily took classes at Georgia Tech. It was during this period that he met Jacqueline Holley. It was 1943. They were married on December 1, 1945 at First Baptist Church in Atlanta.
Mr. Baugh graduated from Samford University in Birmingham, prepared for a future as a pharmacist. He soon found a job with Morse and McElveen Pharmacy on North Highland Drive in Atlanta. He eventually became a part owner and the name was changed to Baugh and McElveen Pharmacy.
Mr. Baugh was a committed Christian, serving on the Board of Deacons at First Baptist Church, Atlanta, and then at Second Ponce de Leon Baptist in Buckhead where he and Jackie served dinner to the Youth Choir for nearly 30 years.
Charlie was on a first name basis with all and warmly greeted everyone he encountered. His legacy as a man of deep faith was reflected in a life of service. He delighted in helping others and was led by a strong sense of compassion.
A graveside service for Mr. Baugh will be held Saturday, February 8, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Westview Cemetery, 1680 Westview Dr SW, Atlanta, GA 30310.
