Charles Edgar Bowen

Charles Edgar Bowen, 84, an Atlanta native, passed away June 18, 2015. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Coll Bowen; his brother, Frank Coll Bowen, Jr.; his daughter, Cary Bowen Thorpe; and his beloved, Sundance.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Laura H. Bowen; his daughter, Laurie Bowen Carmichael (Archie); his son, Charles Edgar Bowen, Jr.; his grandchildren, Hailey Carmichael Domeck (Justin), A.D. Carmichael, Elizabeth Thorpe, William Thorpe, Hala Bowen, Charles (Chase) Edgar Bowen III; his sister, Bettie Bowen Payne (Don), numerous nieces and nephews, and his life-long secretary, Martha Powers.

Charlie was in the last graduating class of Boys’ High of Atlanta and a recent president of their alumni association. He attended University of Georgia where he was a member of CHI Phi fraternity. He married his high school sweetheart, Laura in 1956 and they began their family where it can be said he did most anything he wanted. He worked and helped build many family businesses spanning four generations including Wilbert Burial Vault Company, Westview Cemetery, and United Waste Service, serving as Chairman of Westview Cemetery until his passing. He served on many civic and business organizations including past President of Kiwanis Club of Atlanta, Georgia. He was a member of The Cathedral of St. Philip.

Charlie spent many a joyful day in the outdoors with his family and friends fishing, hunting, golfing, and boating. Excursions to the Islands aboard The Great Escape were followed by farming hay on his John Deere tractors at their country home near Newnan. He was a member of The Piedmont Driving Club and Peachtree Golf Club. Charlie can be remembered as a no-nonsense, get it done, fun classy gentleman who knew how to enjoy life and showed many people the same.

The family will receive friends on Monday, June 22, from 5 until 7 o’clock at Patterson Spring Hill. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 23, at 11 o’clock at Patterson Spring Hill with interment following at Westview Cemetery.
