Consuelo Angel rose to eternal life in Atlanta, Georgia on January 9, 2023 at the age of 85 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Consuelo was born in Bogotá, Colombia in 1937 and grew up at her family’s farm in Bucaramanga, Colombia with her loving mother, Mercedes Sorzano, and many aunts, uncles and cousins following her father’s death shortly after she was born. As a young child and young woman, she was ahead of her time and played many sports, including softball and tennis. She graduated high school from Marymount School in Bogota and then obtained a four-year arts degree with a concentration in Artistic Ceramics from the Universidad Colegio Mayor de Cundinamarca. Her creative talents were many, and she excelled at ceramics, painting and playing instruments, particularly the accordion, which she joyfully played for every family birthday.
In 1960, she married her husband of 62 years, Dr. Eduardo Angel, and followed him to many cities including New Orleans, Louisiana, where their three daughters were born, Mayaguez and San Juan, Puerto Rico, Milledgeville, Georgia and ultimately, Atlanta, Georgia. She was particularly fond of Puerto Rico, where she lived for over 20 years, and loved the warm weather and spending time swimming endlessly in the ocean. She also loved her house on Lake Sinclair in Milledgeville where she spent many afternoons swimming in the lake and cutting the grass with her large riding lawn mower.
Consuelo will always be remembered for her unfailing faith in God, her devotion to the Catholic Church, her kindness, her selfless service to others, her love for her family and everyone she met, and for being an inherently happy and joyful person. She combined those attributes to become an incredible volunteer everywhere she lived. In Puerto Rico, she worked with the Rotary Club to form baseball teams and donate uniforms and equipment to orphaned children in needy communities. She also worked closely with Cardinal Luis Aponte Martinez in his War Against Hunger Initiative and was a leader of the Puerto Rico Chapter of the Catholic Daughters of America, which elected her Exemplary Mother in 1972. She attended the San Juan Archdiocese Theological and Pastoral Institute and led weekly prayer circles and catechism classes. She was an active volunteer for her parish in every activity imaginable.
In 1986, Consuelo and Eduardo moved to Milledgeville, Georgia where her thirst to serve did not slow down and she quickly became an active and beloved member of the community. She volunteered at both Sacred Heart Catholic Church and as President of the Baldwin County Medical Auxiliary, and she served for three years as Chairwoman of the Teen Health Forum to educate at-risk teens on drug use prevention and sexual education. In Milledgeville, she was also an active Meals on Wheels volunteer, a Eucharistic Minister and worked tirelessly to serve the poor, elderly, and handicapped communities. For her efforts, Sacred Heart Catholic Church named her Woman of the Year in 1999.
Her energy was infinite, and she was a devoted wife, mother, and friend. She radiated happiness and joy and was a pleasure to be around. She was the ultimate giver, and her kindness knew no bounds.
Consuelo is survived by her husband Eduardo, her daughters Connie, Marcela (Dario), Eugenia (Reinaldo), her grandchildren Isabel and Cristina Callan, Dario Eduardo and Luis Javier Verta, Andrea, Reinaldo Daniel and Gabriel Pascual and many cousins and extended family. She was predeceased by her mother Mercedes Sorzano, her father Daniel Albornoz and her stepfather Luis Vidal, among others.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2023 at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church in Brookhaven, Georgia, with visitation starting at 10:00 a.m. and a funeral mass at 11:00 a.m. She will be buried in Milledgeville, Georgia next to her loving mother at a ceremony following the funeral mass.
Consuelo’s family would like to express their deepest thanks to the staff at Canterbury Court Retirement Community in Atlanta for their many years of loving care of Consuelo. The family will be forever grateful for their efforts and tenderness towards her.
In lieu of flowers, Consuelo’s family asks that donations be made in her name to the Our Lady of the Assumption chapter of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society (Atlanta, GA) or Caritas Internationalis.
