Cornelius Fischer Laube, known to many as “Doodle” or “Corny,” passed away peacefully at his home at Mount Vernon Towers, Sandy Springs, Georgia, on February 15, 2025, at the age of 91. He was born on January 21, 1934, in Orlando, Florida.
Born with cerebral palsy, Cornelius never let physical challenges define him. At five years old, he told his parents that if he had lace-up hunting boots like his brothers, he could walk—and he did. This determination became the foundation of a life marked by resilience, achievement, and a keen sense of humor.
In 1950, Cornelius enrolled at Hammond School in Sandy Springs, located on the very site that would later become Mount Vernon Towers, where he spent his final years. In 1956, he graduated third in his class from Northside High School where he was a member of the Key Club and the National Honor Society. He studied math and science at Emory University for two years before moving to New York to be with his parents. After his mother’s passing, he returned to Atlanta with his father in 1969. He spent most of those years in The Villages in Marietta, where he could often be seen mowing his lawn, enjoying the neighborhood pool, and walking to vote in every election.
A tinkerer at heart, Cornelius had a lifelong passion for science and invention. He loved experimenting with electronics, creating solar-powered devices, and transforming found objects into something new. His sharp mind and creativity allowed him to reimagine everyday items in unique ways. Had his life circumstances been different, he would have made a remarkable engineer - probably at NASA!
A devoted member of Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church since 1954, Cornelius was the last surviving charter member. His church community was a constant source of strength and fellowship throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jennie Holsapple Laube and Joseph Louis Laube; brothers, Kenneth Malcolm Laube and Keith Dodds Laube; sister-in-law, Barbara Lynch Laube; and nephew, William Laube.
Cornelius is survived by his sister, Constance Laube Nichols, widow of Charles Field Nichols; sister-in-law, Betty Marie Laube, widow of Kenneth Laube; nieces and nephew: Tina Nichols Haas (Len Al), Gail Laube Timmerberg (Ron), Karen Laube Raper (Kenneth), Renee Laube, Lisa Robertson Kunkler (Jeff), and Peter Laube (Mary); as well as several grand-nieces, grand-nephews, and cousins.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Love HomeCare and its dedicated caregivers for their kindness, support, and companionship over the past four years.
A private burial will take place on March 2, 2025 at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs. A memorial service celebrating Cornelius’s life will be held on March 29, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church in Sandy Springs.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church or a nonprofit organization of your choice.
