David Mortimer Forrest, age 90, of Dunwoody, Georgia passed away peacefully on May 25, 2026. Born on April 30, 1936, in Charleston, South Carolina, David lived a remarkable life defined by hard work, mechanical brilliance, and an enduring love of aviation.
David proudly served his country in the United States Navy as an aviation electrician, beginning a lifelong connection to aircraft and the skies. At just 17 years old, he earned his pilot’s license, launching a passion that would shape the rest of his life. He continued flying until the age of 80 and became widely respected in the aviation community for his skill, knowledge, and dedication.
Over the decades, David restored and flew numerous aircraft, including historic warplanes such as the Douglas AD-4 Skyraider, North American P-51 Mustang, and North American T-28 Trojan. He participated in many airshows around the country and became a familiar and beloved presence among fellow pilots and friends at DeKalb–Peachtree Airport, where he spent countless hours flying in and out, working on planes, and sharing expertise and camaraderie. He could fly any plane or helicopter and fix any engine put in front of him.
Affectionately known as Captain Dave, he spent his career as a corporate pilot. He loved motorcycles, trucks, cars, fireworks, and collecting airplane parts — treasures that reflected a lifetime of curiosity and hands-on ingenuity. Beneath his rugged mechanical talents was a quick-witted father of four with a sweet tooth that endeared him to family and friends alike.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Katherine Holt Forrest and Mortimer Elliott Forrest; his sister, Jane Forrest Dills; his wife of four decades, Victoria Kaufman Forrest; and his daughter, Michelle Forrest Howell.
He is survived by his wife, MaryAnne Masters Forrest; his son, Michael Forrest; his daughter, Kathy Forrest and partner Kim Ferrer; his daughter, Heather Forrest Mullinax and husband Greg Mullinax; grandson Calvin Mullinax and wife Sierra Mullinax and their son Dalton; grandson Logan Mullinax and wife Lauren Mullinax and their daughter, Hadley; grandson Travis Howell; granddaughter Jessica Howell-Edwards and granddaughter Katie Forrest.
David will be remembered as a gifted pilot, master mechanic, loyal friend, provider for his family, and a true aviation legend whose life never left the runway for long. The sound of radial engines, the thrill of flight, and the friendships he built in hangars and airfields across the country will forever echo in the memories of those who knew and loved him.
