Born April 29, 1918 in Atlanta, GA, she spent her childhood in Atlanta and Tampa, Florida. She graduated from Old Fulton High School in Atlanta and George State College for Women in Milledgeville, GA.
After teaching several years in the Atlanta School System, Edith joined the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) in 1942. She attended officers training school in Des Moines, IA and later was assigned to Camp Crowder, MO where she was a Commander of a WAC detachment until her discharge as a Captain in 1944. During her WAC years she learned how to fly a plane.
In 1947 she married Earl Pope Cook of Troup County, GA. They lived in various Georgia cities as well as three years in Chatham, NJ. Edith was a Girl Scout leader, president of the PTA, and active in the Methodist Church all her life. She volunteered at the Georgia Archives and was a member of several historical societies in Atlanta, St. Simons, Savannah and Tybee Island.
Edith is survived by her husband, Earl Cook; daughters Edith (Cookie) Davis of Jupiter, FL and Marilyn Schwenk of Upper Black Eddy, PA; sons-in-laws Bill Davis and Reinhold Schwenk; grandchildren Bradley (and Courtney) Davis of Jupiter, FL; Laura Leighton of Boca Raton, FL; Katherine Schwenk of New York City; Max (and Rebecca) Schwenk of San Francisco, CA; great grandchildren, Jack and Lucy Davis of Jupiter, FL; and sister-in-law Katherine Cook of LaGrange, GA.
There will be a private memorial service with family in Florida. At a later date, there will be a service at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta.
