

Elizabeth George Pope passed away peacefully at her home June 17, 2014 with her loving husband of 23 years, Mark, at her side. She was born in Atlanta, Georgia on May 15, 1924, daughter of Bill Barton George and Gladys Dorsey George. Her father founded Aristocrat Ice Cream Company. She grew up in the Garden Hills community of Atlanta, attended NAPS "North Avenue Presbyterian School", was a member of OBX sorority during high school, and also attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her first husband Charles Edward Jarvis III, her second husband William N. Benedict Sr., her parents, and her brother William Barton (Billy) George. After being widowed, she married Mark Cooper Pope III, her boyfriend from high school, to whom she has been married for the past 23 years.
Elizabeth was a member of North Avenue Presbyterian Church and attended more recently Peachtree Road United Methodist Church. She had a great appreciation for fine art and antiques and spent much of her time collecting them. She was a caregiver many years for her first husband and her mother. She also enjoyed being involved in her garden club, bridge group, and investment club. She liked traveling with her husband Mark and going to Sea Island which was a very special place for them. Elizabeth was devoted to her children, grandchildren, and her great grandchildren. She was known as Mimi to all of them and enjoyed spending a lot of time with them.
Elizabeth is survived by her husband Mark Cooper Pope III and his family, her two children, Judy Jarvis Strickland(Frank), and Charles Edward Jarvis IV (Jane Ann), 7 grandchildren; Frank Dallas Strickland Jr., Dorsey Strickland Manning (Taylor), Dawson George Strickland (Tara), Forrest Adair Strickland, Ann Elizabeth Jarvis McCroskey (B J), Charles Edward Jarvis V, Frank Porter Jarvis, 9 great grandchildren; Frank Dallas Strickland III, Adair Elizabeth Strickland, Louisa Hall Manning, Margaret Jones Manning, Delaney Judith Strickland, Lucy Emmaline Strickland, Hadley Grace McCroskey, Grayson George McCroskey, and Harper Greer McCroskey; sister-in-law Mrs. William Barton (Mary)George; nieces, Mary Coleman George Jones, Elizabeth George Foley; and nephews, William Barton George, and Ross Bowdre George. Elizabeth is also survived by the families of Charles Edward Jarvis III and William N. Benedict Sr. The family would like to thank her caregivers for years who were Joann Blakeney, Debra Ayo, Valerie Billue, Shell Mender, Pam Gracey. The Memorial Service to celebrate the life of Elizabeth George Pope will be held at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church at 1 o’clock on Friday, June 20 with a reception following the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Shepherd Spinal Center will be appreciated.
