Harriet Elizabeth Sheild Rinehart, age 93, passed away on December 3, 2010 at her residence in Dunwoody, GA. She was born on December 4, 1916 in Washington, DC, where she spent her childhood. She went to Ohio Wesleyan University for 2 and 1/2 years and then transferred to the University of Maryland where she graduated in 1939 with a BS degree in Home Economics and was a member of Chi Omega Fraternity. She married John Ashbaugh Rinehart on August 30, 1942 and had three children – Marc, Steve and Peggy. She had a variety of work experiences and an incredible work ethic. After graduation, she worked at the Hecht Company in Washington, DC as a home counselor and interior decorator where she planned and set up a model apartment. While raising her children, she taught kindergarten at Harvey Brown Presbyterian Church Day School in Louisville, KY. She was later an assistant manager for Cummins Paint and Wallpaper Store in Columbus, OH. In 1967, she taught "Antiquing can be fun!" at Upper Arlington High School Adult Education Program. She worked at Blonders Paint and Wallpaper Store and also sold office and restaurant equipment at Wasserstroms. Later, she worked as a typist for Western Girl Temporary Services and at the AG Engineering Department at Ohio State University
She was also actively involved in a variety of community activities. At First Community Church she was a Sunday school teacher, member of the Board of Women, Chairman of the Guild Group O, and Children's Christian Education Board Member. She made many friends as an active volunteer at the Tri Village Trading Post. She was a Cub Scout Assistant, Brownie Scout Leader, Girl Scout Leader, and Girl Scout Day Camp Counselor. She was an active member of Chi Omega Fraternity for 70 years and stayed young at heart through her association with alumnae and collegians. She was an active member of the Columbus Chi Omega Alumnae Club serving as treasurer, vice-president and president. She was Personnel Advisor for 6 years for the Zeta Alpha Chapter of Chi Omega Fraternity and later was a member of the Zaco House Corporation for Chi Omega at The Ohio State University. She was recognized as the Outstanding Chi Omega Alumna for the state of Ohio in 1993. She moved to Dunwoody, GA in June of 2000 to be closer to her family. A loving mother and grandmother, she was a gracious lady who cared about people and was active and involved in life and giving to others. Preceded in death by husband John Ashbaugh Rinehart, son Stephen Paul Rinehart, and grandson Stephen Douglas Breffle. She is survived by son Marc Rinehart, wife Peggy; grandson Steve Rinehart, wife Jennifer and great grandsons Benjamin and Graydon Rinehart of San Francisco, CA; grandson Dan Rinehart, wife Debbie and great granddaughters Sara and Addison Rinehart of Denver, CO; daughter Peggy Breffle, husband Hal and granddaughters Marcy, Sarah and Jenny Breffle of Atlanta, GA. Also surviving is her sister Francis Sheild Myers of Cleveland, OH, nephew Allyn Myers and niece Marilyn Myers Broughton.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, December 12, 2010 at Kingswood United Methodist Church, 5015 Tilly Mill Rd., Dunwoody, GA 30338.
