

Mrs. John Witherspoon Wallace, the former Elizabeth Butt Slaton (Betty), died peacefully in her sleep on Friday, December 9, 2016.
Mrs. Wallace, a homemaker, was predeceased by her husband, Dr. John Witherspoon Wallace, a prominent Atlanta dentist. She was the daughter of John Marshall Slaton, Jr., and Julia Butt Slaton. A native Atlantan, she was a great niece of former Georgia Governor John Marshall Slaton and a direct descendent of General James Jackson of Revolutionary War fame and one of Georgia’s first governors.
She was a graduate of Washington Seminary and Randolph-Macon Woman’s College where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics and was a member of The Phi Beta Kappa Society, a national honor society. She was also a member of Phi Mu sorority and a past president of Randolph-Macon Woman’s College Atlanta Alumnae Chapter.
Mrs. Wallace was a member of Northside United Methodist Church where she served at various times on the Church Council, Board of Trustees, Building Committee, Staff Parish Committee, Strategic Planning Committee and United Methodist Women Board. She taught Sunday School lessons to the Northside Bible Class and was a leader of Disciple Bible studies.
She was a member of The Junior League of Atlanta, the Atlanta Town Committee of The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Georgia, Atlanta History Center, and Historic Oakland Foundation. She proudly supported and was an avid fan of Georgia Tech where her late husband and father graduated.
Survivors are her daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth Wallace Miller and William Carmichael Miller of Douglasville; and, Julia Wallace Johnston and Stephen Jay Johnston of Marietta; a son and daughter-in-law, John Witherspoon Wallace, Jr., and Caroline Ford Wallace of Atlanta; and, six grandchildren, Elizabeth Slaton Miller, William Carmichael Miller, Jr., Stephen Wallace Johnston, James Slaton Johnston, John Witherspoon Wallace III and Henry Franklin Wallace.
The family will receive friends at H.M. Patterson & Son, Spring Hill, 1020 Spring Street, Atlanta, GA 30309, on Tuesday, December 20, from 3:00-5:00 PM. A funeral service will be held at Northside United Methodist Church, 2799 Northside Drive, NW, Atlanta, GA 30305, on Wednesday, December 21, at 11:00 AM with Dr. Gil Watson officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service in the church parlor. Interment will follow the service at Westview Cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers are the Northside Bible Class of Northside United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Wallace Endowment Fund for Church Grounds Beautification at Northside United Methodist Church, 2799 Northside Drive, NW, Atlanta, GA 30305.
