Eugenia “Jean” Creekmore Wilson passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 14, 2016. A sixth generation Georgian, Jean was born and grew up in Athens, Georgia, where she attended the Lucy Cobb Institute and was graduated from Athens High School with honors. In 1942 at the age of nineteen, Jean was graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism degree from the University of Georgia, where she had been a member of the Phi Mu Sorority. During and after WWII, she worked as a civilian journalist for the Navy Supply Corps in Athens.
She married John C. Wilson on June 6, 1948. They were devoted partners for more than sixty-five years of marriage. They faithfully attended First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta. Jean worked as Vice President of MultiMart Corporation, an import-export business of which John was the founder and chief executive officer. Jean was also a valuable asset and partner throughout John’s many business and civic activities, including many international trips. One especially memorable trip was to Berlin where they witnessed the collapse of the Berlin Wall.
Throughout her life, Jean committed her time and energies to many civic and charitable organizations. For years, she was an indefatigable volunteer and board member for The Atlanta Opera, the A.G. Rhodes Health and Rehab at Wesley Woods, the Frazer Center (formerly known as the Cerebral Palsy School), the Mimosa Garden Club, and the Forward Arts Foundation, where as Education Chair for more than twenty years, she organized art trips around Atlanta, the United States, and overseas. Jean also was a member of the National Committee of Women in the Arts, the Junior League of Athens, Inc., and later, the Junior League of Atlanta.
Above all, Jean was devoted to her family. Without fail, she attended every school performance, recital, and athletic event by her eight grandchildren. Recently, she was blessed with her first great-grandchild.
Jean is survived by her children, Caroline and Scott Spangenberg, Berke and Linda Wilson, and Laura and Stan Blackburn; by her grandchildren, Thomas Spangenberg, Sarah Spangenberg, John Wilson and his fiancé Mary Beth Buchignani, Cason and Christian Given, Charles Wilson and his fiancé Martha Wright, Chase Wilson, Bill Blackburn and his wife Hannah Espy, and Maggie Blackburn; and by her great-granddaughter, Berkeley Given.
The family wishes to express its deep gratitude to the staff at Lenbrook, especially those on the third floor of the Health Center, to Home Care Assistance, and to her wonderful caregivers Deborah Aikhionbare, Josseline Soliman, Pearl Antoine, and Tammera Stanley.
Private services will be held at Arlington Memorial Park. A memorial service will be held at H.M. Patterson & Son, Spring Hill Chapel, 1020 Spring Street, Atlanta, Georgia 30309, on Friday, September 16, 2016, at 2:00 P.M.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
