

FRANK SAMUEL MCGAUGHEY III died on August 6, 2016. He was the first of six children born to Frank Samuel McGaughey, Jr. and Vivian Newberry McGaughey. After graduating from The Marist School in Atlanta, he earned a B.A. from the University of North Carolina in 1970, and a J.D. from the University of Georgia, cum laude, in 1973.
Following law school, Frank (beloved by his family as Mac) practiced corporate law at Powell, Goldstein, Frazer and Murphywhere he was elected partner. The firm later merged with the firm of Bryan Cave LLP, where he was elected as Senior Counsel and was presently practicing with a concentration in trusts, family wealth planning, estates and related tax and business and fiduciary law. He had extensive experience in planning and administration of estates and trusts, including international estate planning; in corporate tax and estate planning for family owned businesses and in advising fiduciaries on legal and regulatory matters.
Frank also had extensive civic involvement and honors which include: Chambers High Net Worth Guide, 2016; The Best Lawyers in America©, Trusts and Estates, 2007-present; Georgia Super Lawyers, Trusts and Estates, 2004-present; Haverty Furniture Companies, Inc., Director; The Katherine and Russell Bellman Foundation, Board of Trustees; The Sara Giles Moore Foundation, Board of Trustees; The Woodruff Arts Center, Trustee. His professional affiliations include: American College of Trusts and Estates Counsel; Atlanta Bar Association; Atlanta Estate Planning Council; State Bar of Georgia, Fiduciary Section.
Frank is survived by his wife, Carolyn Nichols McGaughey; his son Barry Edleman (Dawn); his daughter Lisa McGaughey Weldon (predeceased by her husband Dr. Quinton Weldon); his brothers, Richard Newberry McGaughey (Ann), Michael Joseph McGaughey (Craig), and Douglas Sloan McGaughey (Julie); his sister, Clare McGaughey Bryan (John); his grandchildren, Ryan Samuel Edleman (Sophie), Rachel Kalyn Edleman, Hunter Kennedy Weldon, Taylor Chase Weldon, Parker McGaughey Weldon and Ansley Elizabeth Weldon; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his youngest sister, Margaret Haverty McGaughey and his parents.
He will be missed enormously, but will always be remembered for his probing intellect, his love of history and the arts, quick wit, obtaining his pilots license, and his service to clients and family. His professional legal career was equally matched with his care for his horses, cows, dogs and sheep,requiring his hard work on his farm near Washington, Georgia where he was laboring at the time of his death.
In lieu of flowers the family is requesting that a donation be made to one of the following; Woodruff Arts Center, The Little Theater in Washington, Ga or Candler Field Museum at Peach State Airport in Williamson, Ga.
Memorial service will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 4465 Northside Drive NW Atlanta, Georgia 30327 on Saturday August 13, 2016 at 2:00 pm with reception following at the church. Online condolences may be made at hmpattersonspringhill.com.
