Franklin Phillip Massey, 61, died Sunday, Jan. 19 in Gentiva Hospice in Marietta after a long battle with cancer. He was born at Piedmont Hospital on Sept. 22, 1952 to Roy Hardee Massey Jr. and Lillian Gudenrath Massey both of whom predeceased him. He is survived by what was most important to him in this life, his family: his sister Allison Massey Eustace (John), brothers Z. David Massey (Tinka) and Roy Hardee Massey III (Rhyne) as well as his stepsister Linda Farrell Shippey and stepbrothers, Dr. William Farrell and Edgar Farrell.
Frank played football for Carrabelle High School in Marianna, Fla. where he graduated in 1972. He served in the United States Navy from 1981 to 1983. He then obtained his commercial driver’s license and enjoyed delivering trucks all over the U.S. while soaking up the sights – from the Grand Canyon to the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Coast.
When he was not delivering new bread trucks to Flowers Baking Company’s independent distributors, Frank was most likely in his own pick-up where he kept his fishing tackle ever ready. His passion was saltwater fishing: catching, cleaning and cooking redfish, trout and flounder in the waters around Jekyll Island.
Frank was a kind and loving brother and the family misses him terribly, as does his brother David’s Shipoo, Chris. There will be a small family service in the future. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Gentiva Hospice, Attn: Vicki Ellis, 3101 Towercreek Parkway, Suite 225, Atlanta, GA 30339.
