He was born to Frederic Eugene Dixon and Beulah Garrison on October 7, 1930 in Luthersville, Georgia. He married his bride of 59 years, Faye Joyce Elrod, in Atlanta on August 24, 1955. Fred graduated from Luthersville High School in 1948 and began working as a fireman for the Newnan Fire Department. He was drafted into the US Army in 1951 during the Korean War. After receiving an honorable discharge in 1953 Fred left Fort Hood, TX for Atlanta. He began working with his uncle, Frank Garrison, at C.A. Rauschenberg Insurance Agency which he left in 2018 after 65 years. He was the head deacon of Woodland Hills Baptist Church in Atlanta for 20 years. He was passionate about big band music, baseball (a fantastic shortstop), travel and trains. The last two intersected many times with cross country trips. An accomplished singer he often soloed at church.
Fred was preceded in death by his wife Joyce in 2015. He is survived by his sister; Floella Owens, daughter; Faye Knopf, son; Gene Dixon, three granddaughters; Rachel, Kristina, and Jessica, and three great-grandchildren; Abigail, Bryson, and Kate.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 3rd at 11:00 AM at H.M. Patterson and Son- Spring Hill, 1020 Spring St, NW, Atlanta, GA 30309.
