

Rev. George Washington McCune, Jr. George Washington McCune, Jr. passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, March 1st, 2016. He was born on Wednesday, December 7th, 1921, at home in Spring Valley, New York to parents, Sadie and George W. McCune, Sr, the youngest of four children and the only son. His sisters, Ruth, Edith and Lois have pre-deceased him. George graduated from Spring Valley High School and went to work on Wall St., beginning a career in banking. However, he felt led to the ministry and graduated from Bob Jones University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1945 and was ordained to the Ministry in 1945 at Hillsboro Baptist Church in Hillsboro, Alabama. George and Margaret were married in the First Baptist Church of Eau Claire, WIsconsin on August 1, 1945. Subsequently, the couple moved to Spring Valley and George graduated from The Biblical Seminary in New York with a Bachelor of Sacred Theology in 1950 and the couple was sponsored by the Conservative Baptist Foreign Mission Society and spent five years as missionaries in Toyko and Yonezawa, Japan. Returning to the United States, George served as the Midwest and finally, the Southern Representative for the Foreign Mission Society, speaking and raising awareness and funding for missions and missionaries around the world. During his 31 years with the Foreign Mission Society, George traveled extensively throughout Africa, the Middle East, the Far East and Europe. Upon his retirement in 1981, George became the Pastoral Care Minister at Wieuca Road Baptist Church, then under the leadership of Dr. Bill Self. While visiting the sick, performing marriage services and funerals, he championed Bible studies and classes designed to strengthened believers' knowledge of the Holy Scriptures. George was also instrumental in helping to form a cooperative interdenominational agency within the Buckhead churches of Atlanta to assist less fortunate members of our community with temporary financial and housing needs. Upon his retirement from Wieuca, George worked for the IRS for seven years, part and full time and ended his working career as a substitute teacher in the Roswell and Alpharetta grammar schools, having a special gift in caring for special needs children. George is survived by his wife, Margaret Graves McCune of 69 years, a daughter, Sharon Lynn McCune and sons Scott Leigh McCune (spouse Pamela Bedford McCune) and Stephen George McCune (spouse Elizabeth Freeman McCune) and grandchildren Christopher Scott McCune. Courtney McCune Cockrell (spouse Keith Wayne Cockrell), Kimberly McCune Thomas (spouse James Derrick Thomas) , Shaun Stephen McCune and Shelley Alyse McCune and great grandson, James Walker Thomas. The Celebration of LIfe service will be held at Wieuca Road Baptist Church, 3626 Peachtree Rd., NE, Atlanta, GA 30326 at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 19th with a reception following in the Heritage Room at Wieuca Road Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Red Cross.
