Mrs. Sanders was born on November, 30, 1928, in Stettin, Germany, to the late Georg and Meta Henning. As one of 8 children, Grete’s young years were spent helping her mother with her younger siblings, running from the bombs and hiding from soldiers during World War II. Grete eventually got away and settled in Mutterstad near Manheim, then West Germany, in the late forties where she got to grow up.
Grete had a very long and interesting life, below is a summary of the decades:
In the fifties Grete had her only son and became part of the US forces family.
In the sixties Grete made it to the United States, living in different places (including Alaska and New York City), and trips back to Germany (including Darmstadt) depending on the requirements of the US forces.
Late seventies Grete took some independent steps and moved to New York City where she lived until 1991, spending some enjoyable years working at the Plaza Hotel where she got to see and meet many movie stars and celebrities.
In 1991 Grete reached retirement age and 30 years ago took early-retirement, moving with her son and daughter-in-law to spend the next 6 years in Germany.
Moving back to the US and settling down in Atlanta in 1997, Grete lived in the senior community (now known as Ashford Landing) until the day of her passing.
Grete got to see Europe, traveling by car and on the bus to many places including her favorite spots Paris and Vienna. Aside from Europe Grete got to visit the island of Curacao where she was known as Mom to anyone that got to meet her. She made the same impression on young and old.
Grete will be remembered for her stories about war time in Germany, her interest in the monarchy stories, her determination, her cooking, but most of all the love for her son.
