

Harriet Hayes McDevitt, 78, of Atlanta, passed away on December 23, of heart failure. Born and raised in Atlanta, she earned her BS at Emory University and later her MS at GA State. Harriet would go on to raise seven children with loving husband Harry of 53 years. Harriet had a fulfilling 43 year teaching career retiring from Shiloh High School in 2005, where she would earn many accolades, including multiple STAR Teacher awards. She continued to teach part time at Phoenix and St. Pius X High Schools.
Along with enjoying her love of history, art, music, travel, supporting the successes of her children, she also took great pride in accomplishments of her students where many would keep in touch with her long after graduation.
Harriet is preceded in death by parents Emma R. and Joseph Eli Hayes, and husband Harry. Survivors include sons Harry Jr. (Helen), Pat (Susan), Sean (Tracey), daughters Julia (Wayne), Heather, Shannon and son Brian (Stephanie), 15 grandchildren, two great grandchildren, extended family and friends. Harriet will always be remembered for her unsurpassed love and dedication to family.
Receiving of friends will be held on Tuesday, December 27, 2016 from 10:30 am to 11:00 am at H.M. Patterson Spring Hill. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 am and interment at Westview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Winship Cancer Center at Emory University or St. Pius X Catholic High School.
