

Helen “Mard” Allen (Walkley) Hubbard died on July 26, 2014 in Camarillo, CA. Born April 7, 1917 in Atlanta, GA, to George Washington and Helen Watkins (Walkley) Allen, she was adopted and raised by her maternal grandparents, Norman Smith and Ada (Due) “Two Mamas” Walkley after her mother died in childbirth.
Helen and her husband, Charles Wikle Hubbard met at St. Paul’s Methodist Church in the Grant Park area and fell in love. They patiently dated and waited until circumstances allowed them to be married on March 18, 1939. They made their home in East Lake and later in Lilburn, GA and were part of the community of The Little Ten in Snellville. In 1995 she joined her oldest son’s household in Camarillo, CA, where she remained active and alert until the end.
Among her favorite activities were writing - some of her articles and poetry were published - church worship, and breakfasting regularly with “The Hardee Bunch”. She also enjoyed walking, which she continued to do until mere months before the end of her life. Helen was active in the Methodist church from birth until 1980 when she received baptism at the hands of her Baptist minister son-in-law. During her years in Camarillo she attended the 1st Baptist Church.
Helen was predeceased by her husband; daughter, Helen Marie (Hubbard) Bramblett, and daughter-in-law, Christine (Chewning) Hubbard. She is survived by her brother, Dwight G. Allen, of Ashville, NC, her sons Charles Leon “Chuck” Hubbard and Douglas Wikle Hubbard; son-in-law, Rev. Richard Allen “Bud” Bramblett; daughter-in-law, Margaret Ida (Harrison) Hubbard; 19 grandchildren: Renee Hight, Rynette Schescke, Ray, Ronald, Robert, and Roger Hubbard; Laura Jones, Carrie Brown, Doug, Charlie, Matthew, Michael, Joseph, and Benjamin Hubbard; Melanie Messina, Richard, Robert, Russell, and Ryan Bramblett; 63 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grand children.
Friends are welcome to join the family at services to be held Saturday, August 9th, at 10am at Killian Hill Baptist Church, 151 Arcade Rd, Lilburn. Son-in-law Bud Bramblett will officiate there and after a procession to the Westview Cemetery immediately afterwards where she will be laid to rest in the family plot at the side of her dear husband. Arrangements are being handled by Patterson Funeral Home in Atlanta. Services were also held in Camarillo, CA on August 2nd.
