Howard Patrick Jack Sr.

February 7, 1925 – August 17, 2019

Howard Patrick Jack Sr, age 94, peacefully passed away on Saturday, August 17, 2019. Always known for his quick wit and matter of fact outlook on life; he remained that way up to the end. Born in Atlanta on February 7,1925 to Howard Percy and Allien Whitfield (Griste) Jack he was the youngest of their four children.

After attending Tech High he joined the United States Army Air Forces. The year was 1943 and he became a member of the 350th Airdrome Squadron. Their mission took the Squadron to the China-Burma-India Theatre. Their mission was to supply the British Fourth Army in the China offensive. They also flew in supplies over “The Hump” and evacuated the wounded. In 1946, Howard was honorably discharged from the service.

After his serving his country Howard went onto became a very successful Mechanical Engineer. He was a partner at Britt Alderman and Associates, a Consulting Engineering Firm. He working at the firm for 27 years. John Portman, one of Atlanta’s most renowned architects, was one of their largest clients. The two firms joined forces during the 1960s’ and 1970s’ and reshaped the downtown Atlanta skyline. On the international stage their work included several buildings in Europe and the Far East.

Howard's next move was to the firm of Stevens & Wilkinson. There as the Lead Plumbing Engineer he designed the plumbing systems for the Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport. One of his favorite quips was to say, “Traveler's use my work coming to and going from Atlanta.”

His last employer, EBASCO Services was primarily known for Nuclear and Coal power plant design His position there was that of Principal Engineer. In 1992 Howard retired and he and Myrl enjoyed boating and living at Lake Lanier.

He was a founding member and the first president of the American Society of Plumbing Engineers, Atlanta chapter. The organization just celebrated their 50th anniversary and Howard was an honored guest at that celebration.

His bride of 51 years, Myrl, preceded him in death. Their youngest son, Allen, passed away in 2014. His remaining children are; Nancy Jack (Ron) Logan, Howard Patrick (Diane) Jack, Jr., and Marianna Jack (Ken) Collins. He was the grandpa to four grandchildren and great-grandpa to six great grandchildren.

This August 31, Howard will join his late wife and be interred in the Columbarium at St. Martin’s of the Field Episcopal Church. A private family ceremony has been planned. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the American Kidney Fund.
