
Ira A Ferguson, Jr, MD, age 81, son of Ira A Ferguson Sr, MD and Carolynn Tye Ferguson, died Friday 4/22/2011 following a brief illness. Dr Ferguson, a native Atlantan, graduated from North Fulton High School 1945, and Emory College 1948 where he was a member of Sigma Chi, The Glee Club, and Phi Beta Kappa, graduating with honors. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from Emory University School of Medicine, class of 1952, and was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed his surgical training at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and joined the faculty of Emory following two years of service in the Navy. He spent his entire professional career at Emory, serving as Assistant Professor of Surgery. Dr Ferguson was a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Southeastern Surgical Congress, and the Southern Surgeons Club, serving as its President in 1995. He was a member of the Capitol City Club and was an avid bridge player, participating in regional and national duplicate bridge competitions and obtaining the rank of life master. Patterson's Spring Hill is handling cremation, and funeral and interment in the memorial garden will be at St Luke's Episcopal Church, Peachtree Street Thursday April 28th at 2pm. Survivors are brother John Tye Ferguson, Ira A Ferguson III of Gainsville, Ga; Charles M Ferguson MD of LaGrange, and Carol F Weiss of Columbus, and five grandchildren and one great grandchild. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Department of Surgery, Emory University School of Medicine. Arrangements under the direction of H.M. Patterson & Son, Spring Hill in Atlanta, GA.
