

EWING, James L., III JAMES L. EWING III James L. Ewing III of Atlanta died on November 2, 2012 after a long illness. He was born on May 29, 1928 in Shreveport, Louisiana, son of Elizabeth P. Nones of Louisville, KY and Toulmin Hunter Ewing, of New Orleans, who was son of Col. Robert Ewing, owner of New Orleans States Item and other Louisiana newspapers. After his father died at an early age, he grew up with his mother in New York City and Sarasota, Florida. He attended Washington & Lee University and then Florida State University where he transferred after meeting his future wife, Leila Kate Lane of Orlando, Florida. He joined the family newspapers in Monroe, Louisiana as an editor of the Monroe Morning News Star until joining Delta Air Lines, which brought him and his family to Atlanta in 1962. At Delta he worked on the Delta Digest and as Public Relations Director before retiring in 1987. He and Leila travelled widely, and for many years he wrote a travel column, "Away From Home", for the Manchester (N.H.) Union Leader and several other newspapers under the pen name Richard Enright. He was a kind and loving family man. His perceptiveness, creativity and active imagination shine through in his varied writings. His love for good music, single malt scotch whiskey and strong coffee live on in his surviving sons, Toulmin Hunter Ewing II and James L. Ewing, IV. His gift for attracting people and telling stories transferred directly to his beloved son William Lane Ewing who predeceased him. He is survived by his loving wife Leila Lane Ewing, with whom he shared 62 years of happy marriage, sons James and Hunter, two daughters in law, and five grandchildren. The family will receive guest 30 minutes prior to the service. Funeral services will be held Monday November 5, 2012. at 10:00 a.m. at H.M. Patterson Spring Hill Chapel 1020 Spring St NW Atlanta Ga. 30309. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be considered to The American Heart Association
