

James Emmanuel Zambounis, 87, passed away in Atlanta, Georgia on Friday, January 15. A recent resident of Sun City, Hilton Head Island, he and his wife returned to Atlanta after an absence of 10 years. Born in Akron, Ohio, he was the son of Emmanuel and Rose Zambounis, who had emigrated from Samos, Greece. James was a graduate of the Akron School of Art, graduating second in his class. In 1951 Jim moved to Atlanta to join his family. He was employed by Lockheed in Marietta. In addition to his technical work, he was curator of large billboards, signage, and advertising. He later joined the Mead Corporation, where he served as Head of Corporate Design. Jim was very active in the Atlanta Art scene, especially working with the Atlanta Dogwood Festival. During his career, Jim did freelance work for the High Museum of Art, designing posters and catalogs for various exhibits, receiving several design awards. Jim headed the art committee of the Annunciation Cathedral in Atlanta where he was very active as well as with the Metropolis of Atlanta. His friends will remember him as the talented, kind and unassuming person, who was often referred to as “Professor” by his friends and acquaintances. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Venus Zambounis, who together worked diligently for the church at the Metropolis, his sister Elsie Kalan, of New York, and niece, Christie Kalan, of Spain. Visitation will be held at the H.M. Patterson & Son – Oglethorpe Hill Chapel Monday 18 January 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM, followed by a prayer circle. Funeral services will be held Tuesday 19 January 11:00 AM at the Annunciation Cathedral with Father Paul A. Kapalanis and Father Christos P. Mars officiating. Burial will follow at Arlington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation, 2500 Clairmont Rd., NE, Atlanta, GA, 30329.
