November 20, 1930 – March 11, 2018
Jo Ann Mathews, 87, of Atlanta passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 11, 2018 at Pruitt Health of Monroe in Forsyth, Georgia. While Jo Ann suffered broken bones in a recent fall and was being cared for at the rehab facility, her death was from natural causes. Jo Ann was born on November 20, 1930 in Gainesville, Georgia to Rose (Dorough) Mathews and Joe Mathews. Jo Ann’s father passed away prior to her birth, and she grew up during the Great Depression in Gainesville together with her maternal relatives, the Dorough family, which provided her with grandparents and four loving aunts. Jo Ann’s maternal grandmother, Lillie Westmoreland Dorough of Royston, GA lived to be 111 years old. Jo Ann’s mother Rose remarried in 1945 to Henry Clarence Walker of Clermont, Georgia. Jo Ann moved with the family to Washington, DC for several years, then back to Atlanta, and eventually to Chamblee in 1950. Jo Ann’s mother Rose, passed away in 2001 at age 92. Jo Ann was a member of Skyland United Methodist Church in Brookhaven. During their childhood, Jo Ann lovingly cared for and is survived by her two half-brothers, William Thomas Walker (Tom) of Loganville, GA, and Edwin Travis Walker (Eddie) of Monticello, GA. Jo Ann greatly loved her extended family and is also survived by sisters-in-law Lynn Walker of Loganville and Cindy Walker of Monticello, nephews David Thomas Walker and wife Candice Walker of Dacula, GA, Andrew David Walker and wife Aura Walker of Fairfax, Virginia, Jeffery Matthew Walker of Roswell, GA, and niece Jessica Walker Igarashi and husband Michael Igarashi of Mansfield, GA. Jo Ann also loved her ten great-nephews and great-nieces, Alex Igarashi, Seth Igarashi, Joseph Igarashi, Brandon Igarashi, Anna Igarashi, Ella Igarashi, David Igarashi, Daniel Igarashi, Avery Walker and Ariana Walker. Because Jo Ann believed in Jesus Christ as her personal savior, we are confident that she is now walking on streets of gold with no broken bones or illnesses. Jo Ann lived a long, simple, happy and contented life and was loved in return by her whole family. We celebrate her life and are grateful for the love she showed to everyone she knew.
