Jack Broshar was born in Moravia, IA, the son of Chester and Bertha Broshar. He was a 1952 graduate of Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in industrial engineering, and in 1974 graduated from Georgia State University with a Master of Business Administration degree, majoring in life insurance.
He served for four years in the United States Navy during the Korean War as Assistant Engineering Officer on the destroyer USS Floyd B. Parks (DD-884) in combat in Korea, and as a Navy pilot with Patrol Squadron Five, Naval Air Station Jacksonville, FL. He flew the P2V-5 Neptune anti-submarine patrol bomber, with deployments to Argentina, Newfoundland, and Port Lyautey, French Morocco. He attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the Reserves. He was decorated by the South Korean government in June 2000 for 1952 combat action.
He married Martha Faye Hostetter of Defuniak Springs, FL in 1956; she preceded him in death in 1998. They were the parents of three children, Russell of Marietta, GA, Robin Gubran of Woodstock, GA, and David of Black Mountain, NC. He is survived by a brother, Bill, of Lake City, FL, a sister, Janet Rushton, of Des Moines, IA, and two daughters-in-law, Julie and Kim and son-in-law, Gubran Gubran.
Jack was a retired vice president of Munich American Reassurance Company in Atlanta, GA. He was active in home office life underwriting, serving as president of the Institute of Home Office Underwriters in 1993-1994.
He was active in civil rights, working part time for the Vine City Foundation in the late 1960’s, and he ran eighteen Peachtree Road Races and nine marathons from 1978-1995. He was also very active in choral music as a first tenor, singing with, among other groups, the Choral Guild of Atlanta, the original Atlanta Singers, the Colson Chorale, and for over 20 years, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus under conductor Robert Shaw. In later years he traveled extensively. He was a member of Dunwoody UMC.
The body was cremated, memorial (funeral) services. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to the Salvation Army.
