

John was a 1956 graduate of Georgia Military Academy/Woodward Academy, where his daughter, Joy, graduated 42 years later. He served four years in the US Navy and twenty years in the Air Force, where he retired as a Captain. John made his home in Atlanta where he obtained his law degree from the Woodrow Wilson College of Law and went on to practice law for over 50 years. He was extremely devoted to his clients. He was a fifty-year member of the Georgia Bar Association. He was also a fifty-year member of the Masonic Lodge, the Yaraab Shrine Temple, and a proud member of the Yaraab Shrine Temple Marching Band.
John married the former Hazel Cantrell on February 1, 1979. They adored each other for over 40 years of marriage.
John retired from his law career in 2018. In retirement he enjoyed spending time with his wife, Hazel, and his daughter, Joy, watching his family flourish, dividing his time between Atlanta and his second home in St. Augustine, Florida, and spending time with dear friends. He enjoyed flying small aircraft, boating, traveling the world, and spending time with his dogs.
John was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Martha and his father, Johnny. He is survived by his wife, Hazel; daughter, Joy; daughter Ellen and her husband, David; his sister-in-law, Martha Greenberg; his sister-in-law, Joyce Stickel and her husband, Leroy; and his brother-in-law, Billy Cantrell and his wife, Rosemary. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Visitation will be held on Monday, January 17, 2022, from 4-7pm at H.M. Patterson & Son-Oglethorpe Hill Chapel, 4550 Peachtree Rd. Atlanta, GA 30319. The funeral service will be on January 18, 2022, at 1pm at H.M. Patterson & Son-Oglethorpe Hill Chapel, followed by burial at Arlington Memorial Park, 201 Mt. Vernon Hwy. Sandy Springs, GA 30328.
