

John Joseph McDonough Jr. (Jack) passed away peacefully at his home in Atlanta on Tuesday, March 19 at the age of 81. Jack was born in Augusta, Georgia on February 10, 1932 to the late John Joseph McDonough and Meta Thompson McDonough of Savannah, Georgia. He spent his formative years in Rome, Georgia where he attended the Darlington School. He followed in his father’s footsteps and attended Georgia Tech on a football scholarship where he played for a year. Jack decided to pursue a liberal arts degree and transferred to The University of Virginia and graduated with distinction in 1954. Following his graduation, he proudly served his country as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy aboard the destroyer U.S.S. Henley. After completing his service, Jack joined Merrill Lynch and spent a career of over 30 years with the company in a variety of positions. He was a financial consultant, he managed branch offices in Savannah, Palm Beach and Atlanta and ultimately served as the firm’s Southeastern Regional Director. Jack was a member of Peachtree Golf Club, Piedmont Driving Club, the Nine O’Clocks, Lake Toxaway Country Club and Smoke Rise Field Club. In his free time, he was an avid golfer, hunter and gardener and a lover of history, literature and music. Jack was particularly interested in supporting education and the arts and was an active fundraiser for Woodward Academy and the Atlanta Opera and served on both organization’s boards. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Patty McDonough, daughter Meta Matthews and husband Mark of Loganville, GA., daughter Julia Neisler of Aventura, Fla, son Jack McDonough and wife Belinda of Atlanta, GA, daughter Mayla Thom and husband Patrick of Atlanta, GA, grandchildren Christopher Zawol, Virginia and Patrick Thom and John and Lucy McDonough and brother, Bill McDonough and wife Lisa of Mobile, Ala. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 3rd at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.
