The family will receive visitors on Monday, June 18, 2018 between 5:00-7:00pm at H. M. Patterson & Son-Oglethorpe Hill. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm on Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at Peachtree Corners Presbyterian Church with Rev. David K. Hodge officiating. The family will receive visitors prior to the service at 1:00pm. Burial will follow at Prosperity Cemetery in Chamblee, Ga. Arrangements are by H. M. Patterson & Son-Oglethorpe Hill.
John was born to the late Fred and Lena Schwaller on November 8, 1924 in Pittsburgh, PA but grew up in Ohio. He proudly served in the US Army during World War II as part of the First Division that stormed the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and served as an interpreter and driver for military officials. He celebrated VE Day in France shortly before returning home and was awarded The European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 5 bronze stars representing battles of Normandy, northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe as well as medals for shooting and good conduct.
After the war, he attended college on the GI Bill at Bowling Green State University where he met and fell in love with Jeanne Silver. They married in Cleveland, Ohio on March 5, 1950 and were happily married for over 55 years until Jeanne’s death in 2005. Together they had four wonderful children and later four grandchildren all of whom he loved dearly and spoke of often. He was so proud of his family.
John fondly worked as a sports reporter for the Cleveland Press, then in sales and marketing for several companies including Schwinn and Olin, Ramset Division where he earned numerous awards and an appreciation for the game of golf. He then went to work for Lockheed, later AllPoints Relocation Services and Walk Through the Bible in Atlanta. John and Jeanne eventually retired to St. Simons Island, GA where John briefly worked for King and Prince Seafood Company and enjoyed many trips to the beach and pier.
John is preceeded in death by his loving wife Jeanne Silver Schwaller and eldest son John Michael Schwaller; his parents Frederick A. Schwaller and Lena Mueller Schwaller of Switzerland; stepmother Lillian, infant half sister and brother Frederick A. Schwaller. He is survived by children Nikki, J. Bradley and Barbara as well as grandchildren Jennifer, Christopher, Michael and Elizabeth and cousin John Isley.
