John’s three children survive him: Hal F. Wiedeman and his wife, Lela; Joanna W. Quillen and her husband, Roger; and Justin H. Wiedeman and his wife Melissa. Thirteen Grand Children and Great Grand Children also survive (in this order): Kelsey and Benjamin Emerson (Peachtree City) great-grandson Liam Emerson; Robert and Virginia Quillen (Decatur) and Emma Quillen (East Point); Sam and Maren Wiedeman (McCleary, Washington), and great-granddaughter Vanessa Wiedeman; Andrew Wiedeman (Atlanta, GA); Brandon and Amanda Welch (Fort Worth, Texas) and great-grandsons Zander Alastair and Emmerson Welch.
John was predeceased by his beloved wife of 47 years, Joan Denson Wiedeman (1937 – 2007). He is survived by his wife of 10 years, Maggie Willis Wiedeman, who is confined by illness.
John Wiedeman was an Atlanta native. He graduated from Bass High School followed by Georgia Tech. He received his BS and MS in Civil Engineering with a focus on public health, in just four years. Following college, John served his country for two years in the Navy.
In 1983, John was an internationally recognized engineer and was elected as the National President of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
John was a member of Atlanta Rotary starting in 1966. He served as Pace Academy Parents Club President, a Board Member for the Atlanta Athletic Club Board, the Grounds Chairman for the 1976 US Open and 1981 PGA tournaments, the Chairman of the Georgia Tech Civil Engineering Advisory Committee, an active member of Metro Group as well as Reform Atlanta, Inc. He was a member of Northside United Methodist Church in Atlanta.
He had what others call a ‘moral compass.’ It was his value system, a way of life. He was widely respected in the community and by his peers in the profession and he did so much for so many people.
Integrity was not something he carried on his sleeve. Hard work was never something he shied away from. Giving back to his community was something he did for 50 plus years. And, there was never a man more committed to his family than our father.
On behalf of all his family and friends, congratulations, John Wiedeman, on a life well lived. You are missed. You are admired. You are loved.
Justin Wiedeman, Hal Wiedeman, Joanna Quillen
A celebration of his life will be on Saturday, March 23rd at Northside Methodist Church in Atlanta at 2 PM followed by a reception at the Church.
