John Douglas Willix passed away on January 28, 2012 from complications related to syringomyelia, a degenerative neuromuscular disease. Doug was a native of Seattle, Washington and a graduate of the University of Washington with a B.A. in philosophy. He spent several years in San Diego, Atlanta and Houston working for CDC in the venereal disease program. As an interviewing school instructor, be taught new recruits the art of interviewing people treated for syphilis, in order to determine to whom they might have spread the disease. After several years he sought a career change and enrolled in South Texas College of Law. In 1973 he passed both the Texas and Georgia bar exams, returned to his wife's home state, and began working for the Fulton County Public Defender. Doug had a long and colorful career with the Public Defender, having tried over 150 felony cases. His appellate victories included one in which the Georgia Supreme Court declared a portion of the Georgia death penalty statute unconstitutional. He retired in 1994 when his physical disabilities rendered him unable to practice, but was pleased to make remote appearances on Court TV as a guest commentator over the next few years. Doug is perhaps best remembered for his quick wit, his genuine interest in others, and his wonderful storytelling ability. He is survived by his wife, Georgette Willix and daughter, Laura Willix of Atlanta; his son, Carson Willix of West Palm Beach, Florida: and his sister, Mary Willix of Lafayette, Colorado. A memorial service will be held H.M. Patterson & Son, Spring Hill on Saturday, February 4th at two o'clock in the afternoon. The family requests no flowers, food, or donations but appreciates your cards and letters of condolence.
