Karen McIntosh

Karen was born on July 1, 1944 and raised on the North Shore of Chicago, and she was educated at Woodlands Academy and Barat College in Lake Forest. While a student at Barat, she met her husband of 59 years, Henry McIntosh, who had the nickname of Hawk. She liked his nickname, and afterwards, Henry became Hawk and they enjoyed a wonderful six-decade marriage.

They married shortly after she graduated and moved to Atlanta where Hawk was offered a job with IBM. In Atlanta, they had three daughters: Jennifer, Karen Elizabeth (Kem) and Kate.

After three years in Atlanta, they moved to Brussels, Belgium for Hawk’s job. In Brussels, they had a son, Christopher. Karen and Hawk took advantage of these years to explore Europe and developed a lifelong passion for world travel and art.

After three years in Belgium, they moved back to Atlanta where she lived the rest of her life. Karen was a member of congregation of the Cathedral of Christ the King for 58 years and her faith was important to her. She also developed many lifelong friendships in Atlanta. Karen was a skilled bridge player and gardener and enjoyed hiking at a fast pace, usually with friends and her Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.

Karen and Hawk built a house in Cashiers, NC in 1995 where they developed an additional set of friends and spent five wonderful months each summer enjoying the mountains. She was a member at Country Club of Sapphire Valley, where she picked up golf as an adult, and the Piedmont Driving Club in Atlanta.

Karen was a devoted mom, and she talked with her girls every single day and played an important part in all of her children’s lives. She also treasured her eight grandchildren – to whom she was known by her childhood nickname of Kaki - and her great grandson (George) who was born shortly before her death. Karen was known for being gracious and loyal to her friends and family. When she was the hospital, with Hawk and all of her children present, she said that she was so sorry to put the family through her ordeal.

Karen was pre-deceased by her parents, William McNulty Sr. and Elizabeth McNulty. She is survived by her husband and children: Jennifer Sheehan (Thomas) of New York City, Kem Lee (David) of Salt Lake City, Kate Pearce of Atlanta and Christoper McIntosh of Atlanta. She was also proud of her eight grandchildren: Savannah Lilley (Brennan) of San Francisco, Dr. Charlotte Frost (Ben) of Boston, Graham Lee of Salt Lake City, Caroline, Tommy and Kate Sheehan of New York City, and Janie and Peter Pearce of Atlanta. Karen is also survived by her five siblings – Bill McNulty Jr., Martin McNulty, David McNulty (Judy), Peter McNulty (Brigette), Molly McNulty (John) as well as a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be a small family mass in her memory at Christ the King Church in Atlanta. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to [The St. Vincent DePaul Society].
