Born in Clifton Forge, Virginia on January 25, 1928, Jane grew up in Huntington, West Virginia. An exceptional student, she graduated from Huntington High School. Jane attended the University of Kentucky where she was a proud member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. A true pioneer, Jane attended Law School at the University of Kentucky. At her graduation, she was one of two women students. Unfortunately, during that period in history she was not offered a position to practice law with a law firm after matriculating but instead was offered secretarial positions. Undaunted, Jane used her legal training to become a successful entrepreneur and business woman. Jane opened and ran PEP Sundries which had as many as three stores open and operating in Buckhead, Midtown and Downtown. She also acquired several residential properties in Cobb County which served as rental properties for 40 years. Along the way, she obtained her residential real estate appraiser’s license and worked as an appraiser for some fifteen years. Jane was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Jane remained an active supporter of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority after college and also enjoyed her long term memberships in the P.E.O., the D.A.R., the U.D.C., the Bonanza Investment Club and a gourmet dinner club. For many years, she volunteered at the Atlanta History Center where she worked in the archives department and also served as a hostess for visitors to the Governor’s Mansion. With her Husband, Wade, she thoroughly enjoyed the food and fellowship Cherokee Town and Country Club so ably provided for more than forty- five years.
Jane is survived by her two daughters Craige Pepper Victor and her husband Michael Victor of Erie, Pennsylvania and Carter Pepper DeHaven and her husband Travis DeHaven of Atlanta, Georgia, her grandsons Paul Bowman Root IV and Wade Clayton Root of Erie, Pennsylvania , Clayton Gates DeHaven and Howard Andrew (Drew) DeHaven of Atlanta, Georgia and her granddaughter Courtney Victor Russ and her husband Colin Russ and her great granddaughters Reagan and Sawyer Russ of Cleveland, Ohio and her granddaughter Sloane Victor Bly and her husband Jon Bly of Erie, Pennsylvania.
