
Scott, Marie Bender (Mrs. George Ryland Scott) age 92 of Atlanta, GA passed away peacefully at her home on May 10, 2011. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend to all who knew her and the epitome of a gracious Southern lady. She was born November 13, 1918 in Memphis, TN to Dr. and Mrs. Charles Bender and was preceded in death by her husband G. Ryland Scott III , her daughter Barbara Scott Fuller and her brother Charles Bender. Marie graduated from Miss Hutchinson's School in Memphis, National Park Women's College in Washington, DC and Southwestern College (now Rhodes) in Memphis where she was in Chi Omega Sorority and a Cotton Carnival Princess. She married her husband in 1939 and they moved to Detroit, Michigan where he was employed in manufacturing for the war effort. She came home to Memphis for her father, a surgeon, to deliver both her children. They moved to Atlanta 65 years ago where her husband started Scott Machine Tool Co. Mrs. Scott was invaluable in helping him get his business started. Marie was a member of Peachtree Presbyterian Church where at 90 she tutored children after school in La Amistad. She was a member of Capital City Club, University Yacht Club, Tea Olive Garden Club and the Atlanta Ceramic Circle. In 1976 Mr. and Mrs. Scott offered their extensive European porcelains for display on a 20 year loan at the High Museum of Art. At their part time home in Ft. Lauderdale, FL they were members of the Coral Ridge Yacht Club and Ft. Lauderdale Yacht Club. Mrs. Scott's focus was her family where she was a constant reflection of God's love and tenderness. Her grandson Scott described her as loving, compassionate, Godly, kindhearted and a survivor who beat breast cancer twice and lung cancer once. Survivors include her son , C. Ryland Scott and his wife Carol, her grandchildren Rev. Amy Scott Vaughn and her husband Andy of Deer Isle, Maine, Dr. Ryland Scott and his wife Jennifer of Rome , GA and Scott Fuller of Oxford , MS. She had six great grandchildren. A special thanks to her caregiver for 9 years Geneva Middlebrooks and to Jean Buchanan and Debra Jackson. A private family entombment will be at Arlington Memorial Park Saturday with a worship celebration of her life following at two o'clock at Arlington Memorial Park, Sunrise Chapel. The family will receive friends before the service at 1:30. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Kindred Spirit Christian Home for Teens, P. O. Box 25001, Atlanta, Ga. 30325-1001.
