Martha Smith Bogle

Martha Smith Bogle, age 88, of Atlanta, Georgia (formerly of Coral Gables, Florida) passed away May 30, 2018. Martha was born March 17, 1930 in Gainesville, Georgia to Kathleen Bailey Burts and L. Ransom Burts. She graduated from Washington Seminary in Atlanta, Georgia and attended Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia.

Martha was asked to be the Sweetheart of Sigma Chi at Georgia Tech, where she met her husband Robert H. Smith Jr. (Bud). They were married for 41 years until Bud’s passing in 1991.

Martha and Bud moved to Coral Gables, Florida where she was involved in many local organizations. She was a docent at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, active in the Daughters of the American Revolution, a member of the altar guild at the First United Methodist Church of Coral Gables, and a member of the Ladies Day committee at Coral Reef Yacht Club.

In 1999 Martha met Robert Bogle at a Coral Reef Yacht Club function. They married in 2000 and spent many happy years on their boat the Enchantment IV cruising the Bahamas with their border collie Miracle.

Martha moved back to Atlanta in 2012 to be closer to her family. At Lenbrook, she was reunited with past friends and met many new ones who made her feel right at home.

Martha was predeceased by husbands Robert H. Smith Jr., Robert Bogle, brother L. Ransom Burts Jr., son Robert H. Smith III and grandson Matthew Davis.

She is survived by her children Kathleen (Harold - deceased) Davis and Reed (Sallie) Smith, daughter-in-law Joanne Smith, 5 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service and celebration of Martha’s life will be held at the Peachtree Road United Methodist Church chapel on Friday, June 1, 2018 at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Peachtree Road United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice.
