

Mary Louise "Weesie" Durant Carter passed away peacefully on July 26, 2012 in Montgomery, Al. where she has resided for the past five years. She was born March 8, 1928 in Mobile, Al, and was part of a large extended family. She languages. Her love of language remained an integral part of her life, as did her devotion to service. She was the assistant to the headmaster at Trinity School in Atlanta for many years. She also served as an instructor of English as a second language at First Presbyterian Church, Atlanta, and later worked with visiting physicians and families at the Center for Disease Control, through Villa International, in Atlanta. She taught practical English, and helped countless families from all over the world learn to adapt to American life. Throughout her life she held a variety of teaching and leadership positions in the Presbyterian Church, USA. She was an accomplished Biblical scholar and a tireless teacher. She taught with grace and humor many adult and children’s Bible classes, led many groups and church circles, and served as the President of the Women of the Church more than once. Her acts of charity extended beyond formal institutions, as she rarely passed up an opportunity to help those in need. She visited and fed AIDS patients when it was first a problem in the city, contributed to the homeless and helped support needy children everywhere. She was the beloved mother of four children, Lea Carter Shuba, of Alexandria, Va., Claudia Carter Covington of Brevard, NC, Russell Durant Carter of Atlanta and Chip Carter of Montgomery, Al. She was also a devoted and attentive grandmother to Matthew Shuba, Meredith Shuba Watson, Claudia Shuba, Tyler Covington, Alec Covington, Abigail Covington, Cooper Carter, Evan Carter, Adrian Carter, and Austin Carter; all of whom benefited from her wit and wisdom .She is also survived by her brother Robert Durant of Mobile, Al. The funeral service will take place at the First Presbyterian Church, 1328 Peachtree St. N.E., at 2 PM on Tuesday, July 31st.
