Nancy was born in Atlanta, the only child of Jess and Lula Barton Wilhoit, on November 10, 1934. She grew up in Morningside and attended Henry Grady High School where she served in the student government, wrote for the school newspaper, and was a member of The National Honor Society and National Beta Club. At Grady, she met her future husband, Steven Wood Fargason, whom she married on June 12, 1954, at Morningside Baptist Church.
Nancy spent the first few years of her marriage in Houston, Texas, where Steve was stationed in the U.S. Air Force. Following their years in Texas, Nancy and Steve made Atlanta their permanent home and started a family.
Education was always a priority and great love for Nancy. As a freshman, she matriculated to The University of Georgia where she joined the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and made the Dean's list. From UGA, she transferred to Emory University as one of the first female coeds outside of the nursing school. She eventually earned an undergraduate degree and a master's degree from Georgia State University in Early Childhood Education. She taught kindergarten for many years at both Northside United Methodist Church and St James United Methodist Church. Leaving the teaching world when Steve took a position in New York City, Nancy embraced the "Big Apple," spending many happy days exploring the city, visiting museums, attending the opera and ballet, and shopping! After several years in New York, Nancy and Steve returned to Atlanta, happy to reunite with their long-time friends and "supper club" group.
Following Steve's untimely death in 1992, Nancy devoted herself to volunteer work as a Stephen Minister, Piedmont Hospital Auxiliary member, and volunteer at both the Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and The Agape Center. She often joked that she ended up with a full-time job as a volunteer once she retired from teaching. Nancy also cherished her friends and experiences in the Druid Hills Garden Club and the "Kappa Bridge" group.
An avid bridge player, Nancy met Frederick Stewart while taking bridge classes. Their love not only for bridge but also for travel and literature led to their marriage in Honolulu, Hawaii. Nancy dearly valued the relationships she made with Fred's family and was truly thankful for how they shared their lives with her. Nancy and Fred traveled the globe until Fred's death in 2014.
In recent years, Nancy moved to Canterbury Court, enjoying new friendships and rekindling old ones. She appreciated the warm, neighborly environment of Canterbury, especially the weekly ninth floor gatherings on Saturday afternoons.
Nancy is survived by her sons, Frank Fargason (Shirley) and Andrew Fargason (Carole); her daughter, Amy Price (Clark); her grandchildren, Arden Moore (Derek), Connor Gray (Aly), and Isabel Fargason. In addition, she leaves behind three beloved great grandchildren: Aspen, Dahlia, and Daisy. Her family will miss her stimulating conversations, lust for adventure, generous spirit, open heart, and unwavering love.
A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, in Dobbs Chapel at Trinity Presbyterian Church (3003 Howell Mill Road). A reception will follow in Williams Hall.
The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff of Canterbury Court and to the caregivers from Personal Care, Inc. for the tremendous support and kindness they gave Nancy during the last few years of her life.
For those who wish to do so, memorials may be made to Doctors Without Borders or a favorite charity.
