Norris Arnold Broyles, Jr.

Born in 1929, Norris was a 4th generation Atlantan, the son of Eva Hall and Norris A. Broyles, Sr. He was the grandson of Arnold Broyles, a former Atlanta alderman of the 4th ward, Mayor Pro Tem, and Clerk of the Superior Court of Fulton County; and great-grandson of Edwin Nash Broyles and Elizabeth Douglass Arnold who came to Atlanta from Rome, GA in 1868.

Norris attended school as a child at the Lovett School “Little Lovett”, North Fulton School, Episcopal High School, Alexandria, VA, and the University of Virginia, class of 1952.

Norris had a long and successful career as an investment banker, succeeding his father as Regional Vice President of the EF Hutton firm and then a VP with Interstate Johnson Lane and Aldridge Wealth Management Group until full retirement.

His civic contributions included board service to the Lovett School, The Atlanta Speech School as Chair, The MS Society of GA. Chair, the Atlanta Botanical Garden as Chair, and advisory board service to Episcopal High School and the University of Virginia. He supported all these institutions devotedly throughout his adult life.

Norris was a lifelong member of the Piedmont Driving Club, the Peachtree Golf Club, and a member of the Sea Pines Country Club, Hilton Head Island, where he often spent time at the family beach home.

In 1952 Norris married Nancy Mason Love of Charlottesville, Va. with whom he has three children: Edwin Nash Broyles, II (Cathy), Norris Arnold Broyles, III (Kathy), and Nancy Broyles James (Doug). His second wife was Sallie Anderson Broyles, whose daughters are Starr Maxwell (Ron) and Mary Latane Rossi. After Sallie’s passing in 1992 Norris married Shirley Hooper of Baltimore who had recently lost her husband Gil, a dear UVA friend of Norris’s. Norris and Shirley enjoyed 30 happy years of travel and fun adventures together until Shirley’s passing in 2023. Shirley’s children are Holly Leachman (Jack), Trey Hooper (Coleman), Laurie Fisher (Alex-recently deceased), and Michelle Springer (John). Norris has 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild, 14 step-grandchildren, and numerous step-great-grandchildren. Norris’s sister, Bert McDaniel of Naples, FL recently passed away just weeks before him at nearly 90 years of age.

The family wishes to acknowledge their gratitude to Norris’s caregivers: Cynthia Price, Allison Warren, Mimi Beaugris, and Lornette Williams for the excellent care and friendship they afforded Norris in his final 3 years living at Peachtree Hills Place; and to the community and staff of Peachtree Hills Place that welcomed him and Shirley and gave them much enjoyment in their final years.

The family suggests that any tributes offered in Norris’s memory may be directed to the Atlanta Botanical Garden, the Lovett School, the Atlanta Speech School, or any organization of your choosing.

There will be a celebration of life service for Norris to be held at Peachtree Hills Place at 2 PM Wednesday the 30th of September with a reception to follow at the same location: 2245 Virginia Pl NE, Atlanta, GA 30305, Parking is limited to valet service on site and street parking.
