Othon Economy, 89, passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2026, of heart failure. An Atlanta native he was born to Greek parents, the late Steve Economy (Efstathios Economopoulos) of Messinia, Greece, and Dora Petkas Economy from Peramos, Asia Minor, and Nea Peramos, Greece. He attended Forrest Avenue Elementary school, and graduated from Georgia Military Academy in l955. After graduating from Georgia State University in 1960, he began working for the Georgia Department of Human Resources as a Community Epidemiologist Specialist where he retired after 33 years of service. A loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, he is survived by his wife of 70 years, Alice Bolles Economy, two daughters, Anne-Marie Guyer, and son-in-law, William Guyer, of Toccoa, GA, and Stephanie Alice Cira and son-in-law, Ryan Cira of Roswell, GA, two grandsons, Eric and Nathan Guyer, one granddaughter, Athena-Dora Cira, one great granddaughter, Cassandra Rose Guyer, and sister-in-law, Athena Gavalas Economy, wife of his beloved deceased brother, Johnny Economy. He was also devoted to his extended family of several cousins among the Economy and Petkas families of Atlanta. A lover of God, family, and Georgia Tech football, he was a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Atlanta, served in the Georgia Air National Guard, Dobbins Air Force Base, and was a member of AHEPA, a Greek Fraternal Organization. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 28, 2026 at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral. Interment will follow at Oakland Cemetery. The family plots at Oakland Cemetery were bought in 1866 by his wife’s great-grandfather, Dr. Alvinzi Gano Thomas, the first minister of the First Christian Church of Atlanta.
