Mrs. Patricia McDonald

September 9, 1939April 15, 2013

Patricia Marie Minser McDonald passed away at home in Atlanta on April 15, 2013 after a yearlong illness with pancreatic cancer. Patty was born September 9, 1939 and spent her first years in White Bear Lake, MN. Her family moved to Oak Ridge, TN in 1942 to support the Manhattan Project. Against a backdrop of wartime secrecy, Patty had a happy and carefree childhood, roaming through the woods and playing with her brother, Billy, and many friends. Patty developed an interest in art at Oak Ridge High, graduating in 1957. Following two years at Chattanooga College, she earned BA and MA degrees in art at the University of Georgia. She taught art at UNC Wilmington and volunteered in the Atlanta Public Schools. On the verge of joining the Peace Corps, she decided instead to marry Laughlin McDonald of Winnsboro, SC, with whom she enjoyed a deeply compatible and lasting relationship. The couple wed in 1966, eventually settling in Atlanta, where they raised two children, Molly and Matthew. Patty was involved and energetic. She provided immigration counseling at Catholic Social Services and was active in her neighborhood civic association. She played tennis at Piedmont Park and swam at the MLK, Jr. Natatorium. A founding member of the Oglethorpe Natural History and Preservation Society, she considered every camping trip a success, no matter how foul the weather. Her beautiful watercolors and ink drawings capture scenes of many an outdoor adventure. Patty knew how to grow, fix, or prepare just about anything. To her last days, she read avidly and was devoted to her book club. In addition to her husband and children, Patty is survived by her brother, William G. Minser, of Maryville, TN, and his family; her son-in-law, Jonathan Gelber; grandchildren Collin McDonald, Lucy Gelber, and Henry Gelber; and numerous kinfolk and friends. A private memorial get-together for family and friends will be held Sunday, April 21 at 4:00 pm.

I was utterly dumbfounded, when my father told be about Patty's death today.

My father met Lauglin n' Patty in the early 1970's. My younger brother n' I were basically the same age as their kids'(Molly n' Matthew), and we went to the beach at Pawley's Island, South Carolina. I was the oldest of the four kids. Molly is a year younger than me. My brother is a year younger than Molly. Matthew is a couple years younger than my brother.

The last time I saw Patty, was probably more than twenty years ago.

I regret having not seen her since then.

May Patty rest in peace.

My heart goes out to Laughlin, Molly, Matthew, and their families.

Laughlin, Molly, and Matthew, our family is very sad to learn about Patty's death. She was such a breath of fresh air - always cheerful, optimistic, and energetic. And such a loving person, who was also very smart and talented. We could feel her deep concern for others and admired her dedication to civic action at every level. Your many friends love you as we loved her. I don't know what heaven is like, but know Patty is there. Thank you for supporting her and making her so proud of you. The world is a better place because she shared her genuine goodness with all of us. Larrie Del and Joe

Was so very sorry to hear of Patti's death. I regret not stopping to say "hello" the first week of April when I was at my parents' former house and Patti was sitting at the front door soaking up the rays. My prayers are with you, Molly and Matthew. With peace and love, Clifford King Harbin, Portsmouth, VA

My heart felt condolences. Words do not exist that can express how much she will be missed.
Nor do the words that can fully express what a wonderful human being I feel privileged to have known.
But one can start with Kind, classy, thoughtful, all wrapped in the biggest heart. I'll never forget you Patty.
