

Ralph Carl Moor of Atlanta, Georgia, died of natural causes April 12, 2015 at the age of 102. He was born in a country farmhouse on December 18, 1912 in the Waltertown community of Georgia, just a few miles from Waycross. The family had settled there to engage in the “Waltertown Experiment” of growing peaches in the South Georgia area more noted for growing pine trees. During his formative years, Ralph grew up picking peaches in the field and driving the wagon carrying the peaches to market. He would always tell of his adventures with Jim and Elic - the family's mule team, Sookie the milk cow, and Bess the family horse. At the time, he didn't even miss the lack of indoor plumbing and electricity. Ralph is preceded in death by his father, Arthur Fisk Moor, his mother Eva Frey Moor, two sisters, Elizabeth Tomlinson, and Grace Mertice Moor, and a Brother Edward Arthur Moor. He is also preceded in death by his second wife , Nadine Penney Moor, and his third wife Margaret Poer Moor with whom he had no children, and his first wife, Ruth Smith with whom he had two sons. He is survived by his son Dr. Ralph Carl Moor, Jr., his daughter in law, Louise Moor (both of Boca Raton, FL), and his son, Larry S. Moor, his daughter in law Julia Grant Moor ( both of Atlanta, Ga). He is also survived by grandson Wayne Tift Moor of Dallas Texas, granddaughter Tamara Sanders Moor of Atlanta Georgia, grandson Michael Grant Moor of Kennesaw Georgia; as well as a great granddaughter Kelsey Jordan Moor of Dallas Texas. Also, surviving are one Niece Deltah Stith of Marietta, GA., and one nephew, Edward Moor of Newnan, GA. Commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Adjutant General’s Corp of the U.S. Army prior to the outbreak of World War II. He served for several years in the War Department Headquarters in Washington DC. When General Douglas McArthur returned to the Philippine Islands, as a Major, Ralph volunteered to serve on his staff and worked to help plan for the anticipated invasion of the Japanese homeland. He was scheduled to be on the third wave of the invasion force. Fortunately the war ended before the invasion could be accomplished. After the War, Ralph continued to serve his country and commanded a unit in the Georgia National Guard, rising to the rank of Brigadier General upon his retirement. Over his distinguished career, Ralph served in several capacities in both the government of the State of Georgia and United States Civil Service. He served on the Washington, D. C. staff of several of Georgia’s Senators (from the golden years of Southern politics) , and Served as Dean of Men at South Georgia College for several years. While his first job with the State of Georgia was working he Georgia Board of Regents as an assistant to Dr. Steadman Vincent Sanford (of Sanford Stadium fame); during the latter years of his service to the State Ralph served as Commissioner for the Georgia State Merit System. He spearheaded the development of procedures that insured that the state employed the best and most highly talented and qualified employees. As if a life of public service wasn't enough, Ralph was also known as a philanthropist. Generous personal donations were made to by Ralph to Georgia State University, South Georgia College and Marietta Schools Foundation (among others). Ralph was a life member of the Alpha Kappa Psi fraternity and served several terms on the Board of Trustees of the Alpha Kappa Psi Building Corporation. He has made generous donations to the Alpha Kappa Psi Foundation to assist in their development of a comprehensive scholarship fund. For the last 31 years, Ralph had been a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, and has attended Wieuca Road Baptist Church. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, April 22 at 1 o’clock at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alpha Kappa Psi Foundation, 7801 East 88th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46256-1233.
